Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 275

Thank you so much for helping Herbert Cambridge Elementary (HCE) celebrate our amazing leaders through the ‘Badges of Honor’ grant. To this point, 277 positive referrals have been written to recognize HCE students as leaders, learners and citizens of our school community. The positive referrals are announced on the morning news, and the students are then given a chance to record the accomplishment and inspire others by writing on the ‘Wall of Awesome’. Each student receives a certificate and a badge to put on their backpack, the first badge that they receive is the customized Herbert Cambridge badge with our beloved mascot Herbie.  As a new school, this badge has helped us build our family identity and a sense of community. Students are then motivated to continue displaying these positive referrals and add a variety of other badges to their backpack. As students display their badges, the benefits are twofold, the “congratulations” and “good job” reinforce that student’s positive behaviors while motivating other students who see the badges to work toward receiving one of their own. At HCE, we see the importance of recognizing and celebrating the genius in each of our students, so it is our goal that by the end of the year every student will receive at least one positive referral.

HCE students are definitely excited and motivated by the positive referral process, and love to display their pride through the ‘Badges of Honor’. It is  even more special is that students are told that the support for these badges came from a very special community member and Champions for Learning.  Our students now understand that not only are they making a difference and being recognized in our school community, but that there is a larger community noticing their positive choices and cheering them on to future success.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to motivate and inspire student success at Herbert Cambridge Elementary, while building a sense of community and honoring students who exemplify the positive characteristics of citizenship.

What will be done with my students

As a part of the Herbert Cambridge Elementary positive behavior plan we will honor our students' positive behaviors and character, by recognizing them on the morning news with 'Positive Referrals'.
Each student who is awarded a positive referral will receive a certificate to share with parents, have their picture displayed at school and receive a 'badge of honor'. Students can proudly display these badges on a backpack, belt loop, shoe, button or anything that the elastic band can connect to. The first badge that students will receive is customized with the Herbert Cambridge Elementary School logo and mascot, which will help build our family identity and sense of community. As they continue to earn positive referrals they can collect and connect different badge designs.

Benefits to my students

This project will benefit the Herbert Cambridge Elementary students by motivating, inspiring and honoring positive behaviors and attitudes. As students' actions, attitudes and efforts are recognized, it will reinforce those qualities. When students display their 'badges of honor' other students will be motivated and inspired to show similar qualities. Even as students learn at home, a student may inspire a brother, sister or cousin when he or she is recognized on the morning news and receives a certificate and badge in the mail. It is our goal that the students at HCE grow as leaders, learners, and citizens of our community, and that within our school family each child feels safe, respected, celebrated, and loved and we honor the students who display these qualities and inspire them in others.
