As students return to school via digital learning and restricted face to face classes, teachers need comprehensive and reliable tools to create safe, interactive, digital curriculum for science lessons. H5P.org is a web-based, community driven organization that provides teachers with the tools necessary to create interactive digital content. These tools are specifically created to integrate with the Canvas LMS, ensuring face to face and virtual learners have equal access to engaging learning opportunities. This grant will provide for three science teachers at Oakridge Middle School to have authoring access to curriculum development tools through H5P, effectively allowing us to provide interactive digital learning activities in science to every student in the school.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 1200

As students returned to school via digital learning and restricted face to face classes, teachers needed comprehensive and reliable tools to create safe, interactive, digital curriculum for science lessons. I requested this grant to provide three science teachers at Oakridge Middle School authoring access to curriculum development tools through H5P.  This effectively allowed us to provide interactive digital learning activities in science to every student in the school.

One of the greatest challenges we faced this year was engaging our virtual learners, especially those learning English as a second language or those with learning challenges.  This grant helped the science teachers at OMS expand our arsenal as we fought to engage and provide virtual students with equal access to our curriculum.  The curriculum development tools provided by H5P turned flat computer screens into opportunities for movement, turned lists of vocabulary into virtual tours, and turned black and white graphs into opportunities for individualized feedback.  Teachers had the opportunity to see our virtual students progress through the standards as quarterly tests demonstrated their general comprehension was improving with the usage of these tools and our labs and writing opportunities showed students were grasping higher level cognitive skills, like how scientific ideas were connected to real-world learning.

I'm not exagerating when I say this grant was initially written in a bit of a panic.  As teachers, we were being asked to teach in a new way and we needed new tools to do it.  Our students were being asked to learn in a new way and we were responsible for not only teaching them the standards, but how to learn all over again.  You helped bridge that gap.  You took a risk, granting funds, for teachers to develop new curriculum with an unproven tool.  You trusted us, that we would take what we knew about good teaching and kids and use that to make sure our students didn't get lost in the fray of all this "newness".  Your faith in us resulted it higher scores, more engaged students and maybe most importantly, our students finding out they could most certainly do hard things when pressed to do so.

What will be done with my students

On August 31st students in Collier County returned to school. Some returned to brick and mortar classes at their local schools and some stayed at home, utilizing the Collier Connects option for digital learning. Regardless of where students went back to school, they were provided with a laptop and digital learning skills were prioritized so that students would be able to continue learning no matter what the future held for in-person learning. Students and teachers alike began to navigate the Canvas Learning Management System, the platform used for providing students with the materials they need for daily lessons.
For teachers, prioritizing digital learning means having to develop new teaching strategies that provide students with equal access to learning. Teachers know that students, especially those with learning disabilities or those who are learning English as a second language, learn best when they actively engage with the material they need to learn. During a normal school year in a science class, that involves hands-on labs, cooperative learning and interactive curriculum. Looking at a flat screen, filling out worksheets and listening to direct instruction via a video call or in the classroom does not empower students to actively participate in their learning.
This is where the authoring tools provided by H5P come into play. These tools allow teachers to create interactive digital activities. Teachers can create unique curriculum that aligns with state standards and District pacing and give students the opportunity to click, move, sequence, graph, video, pair, and play their way to academic success. Normally, there are many barriers for creating, sharing and reusing interactive content. There are copyright issues, technical issues, complex authoring tools and huge problems with compatibility between different types of content formats, authoring tools and publishing platforms. H5P eliminates these barriers and is completely compatible with the Canvas LMS, meaning the activities our teachers will be creating can be directly embedded into Canvas pages and automatically scored. The importance of this for teachers and students cannot be overstated. In a time where every aspect of learning and teaching is more difficult because we are in unchartered territory, these tools simplify curriculum creation and work every single time students and teachers need them to within the learning management system.

Benefits to my students

Students will be able to master 6th, 7th and 8th grade science standards using digital flashcards, branching scenarios, image hotspots, image sequencing, interactive books, virtual tours, highlighting and summarizing to just name a few of the tools available for teachers to use in their lessons. Students with disabilities and students learning English as a second language will have greater access to curriculum that is engaging and created specifically for their needs. As teachers continue to assess student needs, we can continue to personalize the learning opportunities to our specific students. Even when learning returns to a more traditional in-person modality, these resources will still be relevant and engaging.
