Students in The Skills Center have Language-Based Learning Differences and are diagnosed with Specific Learning Disabilities in Reading and Writing.

This makes reading and writing a significant challenge for them. They often lack the foundational tools for reading because they need the right curriculum and explicit, direct instruction.

Phonemic awareness is the ability to understand that spoken words are made up of individual sounds called phonemes, and it’s one of the best early predictors for reading success!

The goal would be for every student in The Skills Center to develop phonemic awareness skills so they have the foundational skills for reading, writing and spelling skills.
The Heggerty Curriculum provides these skills!

The Heggerty curriculum could also be brought into the mainstream classrooms to supplement the curriculum.

These phonemic awareness skills are not always taught in a traditional language arts curriculum. The Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum focuses on these particular skills.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 12

I began a pilot program with my Skills Center students. The ages ranged from Kindergarten to grade 4.

I taught from the three different curriculums that were purchased; Phonemic Awareness for Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Primary grades (1-3). All three curriculums contain explicit and systematic phonemic awareness lessons. In all cases the lessons were oral and auditory and the words were not shown in print to the students. The reason behind this is because Phonemic Awareness (hearing sounds and blending sounds) is the precurser to decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling). I could see a positive impact in all of my students as we progressed through these lessons. I am so very excited to share them with all of the classes next year! I cannot thank you enough for this grant!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

Each level of the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum provides 35 weeks of daily lessons, focusing on eight phonemic awareness skills, along with two additional activities to develop letter and sound recognition, and language awareness. Lessons are designed for a classroom setting, and only take 10-12 minutes.

Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons are meant to supplement existing literacy curriculum and are easily integrated into half-day or full-day programs.

Benefits to my students

As mentioned, students in The Skills Center have Language-Based Learning Differences and are diagnosed with Specific Learning Disabilities in Reading and Writing.

In particular these particular student have an extremely difficult time with decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling). This all stems from their Language- Based Disability which impacts their ability to successfully decipher sounds (phonemic awareness).

Students without phonemic awareness skills will always remain at a disadvantage in literacy. This can lead to low levels of reading and low levels of writing which can also cause mental health issues, such as low self-esteem, anxiety and depression.

When Heggerty lessons are taught consistently each day with explicit teacher modeling and scaffolded support, teachers see improvement in students’ reading, spelling, and writing, as the students learn to hear the sounds in words.

Students in the Skills Center who need remediation would have access to the Heggerty curriculum and they would receive one-on-one lessons with direct instruction. This curriculum can also be shared with class teachers during professional development and then they in turn can implement it into their classrooms.

Phonemic awareness skills are the foundation for literacy!
Thank you for your support!
