Our goal is to support our students in developing a lifelong love for reading and developing reading habits that promote reading for enjoyment, choice, and interest. Research shows that students engaged in reading texts that they enjoy will apply more effort, display more stamina and engage in more decoding strategies when given choice in reading material and motivation to read. The goal is to enhance our student’s independent reading of books by providing various colored wristbands to incentivize individual independent reading.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 535

Thank you so much for your donation! Because of this grant, interest in independent reading skyrocketed across every grade level! As soon as the wristbands were ordered, I sent out a color flyer to all classes showing which wristband they would receive based on the number of Reading Counts points they earn. I am pleased to say that almost every student on campus has earned a wristband, which means they have completely embraced reading! I award the wristbands on a monthly basis, with a rolling system for Reading Counts points, so the points are on a cumulative basis from the beginning of the school year. I award almost every student a new wristband each month, sometimes multiple wristbands! The students are so excited to earn them that I have seen independent reading turn into something that students truly love to do! I’ve seen students who would never have dared to pick up even the smallest of chapter books finish books with several hundred pages in them. I plan on keeping this program for years to come, because the benefits have been incredible. Thank you so much again!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our goal is to support our students in developing a lifelong love for reading and developing reading habits that promote reading for enjoyment, choice, and interest. Research shows that students engaged in reading texts that they enjoy will apply more effort, display more stamina and engage in more decoding strategies when given choice in reading material and motivation to read. The goal is to enhance our student’s independent reading of books by providing various colored wristbands to incentivize individual independent reading.

What will be done with my students

Throughout the year students take part in independent reading using our school library on campus. When completing a book, students are able to earn points through the Reading Counts Platform online. Wristbands will be provided to students based on the points they earn. When they reach different point thresholds by passing Reading Counts tests, they will earn different styles of wristbands.
Our younger students will earn wristbands based on the number of sight words they learn as emerging readers. As they become stronger readers, they will start taking Reading Counts tests to earn different wristbands.

Benefits to my students

Reading for enjoyment and engaging in reading provides students to develop and broaden their vocabulary, and understand the world around them. Empowering students and encouraging independent reading fosters students to continue to apply reading strategies to build their comprehension and students will work harder and put forth more effort when given choice, picking books of interest, and reading materials self-chosen. Celebrating students’ independent reading in elementary school helps to increase student language acquisition, vocabulary development, and set students up for life-long academic success. Since group celebrations are not able to be provided this year due to the pandemic, this is a wonderful alternative to help build a culture that celebrates and values a love of reading.

Budget Narrative

The budget includes multiple styles of wristbands that students will be able to earn based on the number of Reading Counts points they earn through independent reading. This budget also includes wristbands for those emerging readers that are learning their sight words.
