Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 30

The impact and results are above my expectations.  The students' creativity and academic skills soared as a result of this grant.  They started a greeting card business and created crafts for themselves as well as for other teachers. The word got out around school at how well the students were doing that we were asked to do many projects.  At the winter holiday break, our girls made t-shirts and we all wore them on the same day.  We were the "Chic" girls! We also collarborately developed projects with the IHS Redwood Carpentry students.  For Administrative appreciation week, our students in IHS Redwood Carpentry made plate stands and the the students in IHS Cricuteers designed plates for each secretary at our school.  The students were so proud of themselves!  Some our students learned to sew skirts and pillows and then designed them using the cricut machine.  Academically, the students have learned how to use a grid, measure and create their own designs on the computer.  We will continue to expand on both the IHS Cricuteers and IHS Redwood Carpentry for the coming years as a supplement to our Career Experience program!!!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To increase their measurement skills by creating projects using a design space.
To utilize different fonts and images and how to upload.
To develop entrepreneur knowledge and create "mock" business plans.

What will be done with my students

My class was awarded a grant in 2016 for sewing machines and a Cricut machine. The project was a huge success and currently we are utilizing the machines now more than ever due to the pandemic and not being permitted to do job training in the community. We are teaching entrepreneur sills and have started a business called IHS Cricuteers. Our first project was to design personalized masks for the staff and the response has been overwhelming. The students are using their measurement, computer, reading and math skills in a whole new way creating beautiful projects like aprons, mask holders, t-shirts and greeting cards. .

Benefits to my students

Sustaining employment is not easy for people with intellectual disabilities, therefore we emphasis the importance of entrepreneur skills. Through this approach, students are given the opportunity to dream big and put their skills to the test. These lessons provide creativity, self-confidence and life skills needed for their future no matter their career path. Last year Billy's Fresh Produce and Tajha's Dog Treats emerged as our first students to put their dreams to the test. Both students are continuing with their 'businesses" and Billy's Fresh Produce and Tajha's Dog Treats will re-open on November 7th at Ave Maria's Farmers Market! One of our students's already has a long term goal to open a craft booth and join Billy and Tajha with her craft projects.
