Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 22

The outcome to my Grow a Leader grant was a complete success, that will continue for years to come at Corkscrew Middle. This grant helped students with Intensive Behavioral/Autistic disabilities to becomes hands on with a project that helped them learn about the growth of plants but working as a team to build a beautiful garden. All the 6-8th graders in our Intenstive Behavioral Unit all contributed in painting, building, planting and taking care of a garden. Each one of these students have continued to help with the garden by watering the plants, cutting the dead plants leaves off, pulling weeds, giving the plants food and checking for pests that might hurt the plants.

The garden is a weekly part of our lesson in science class and the herbs are currently being used in our culinary classes. We continue to give out to our staff herbs and soon some vegetables to take home. This grant has been a huge success and our goal is to continue to grow the garden bigger to start selling our herbs/vegetables to the local farmers market. Grow a Leader will be a huge part of the Corkscrew Middle School Students everyday learning and hands on experience.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our goal is for our middle school students with special needs to grow a school garden and to sell the produce/plants from the garden. This will teach the students responsibility, leadership, business, the study of the water cycle and healthy eating habits. This will engage students to see the fruits of their labor.

What will be done with my students

Students will be responsible for building the garden, fertilizing the garden, planting the fruits and vegetables, watering and selling the produce/plants grown.

Once the produce/plants have grown they will start selling the fruits and vegetables to our students/staff. They will eventually sell the produce/plants at farmer markets within Collier County.

Benefits to my students

Environmental Ownership= Showing students how seeds grow and develop into a produce.

Social Skills= Students learn how to work as a team and learn leadership skills, responsibility and ownership in success of their garden.

Healthy Habits= Learning to grow fresh produce/plants to sell to their friends/families.

This garden will continue for our school for years to come.
