Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 170

I have been teaching at Avalon for nearly twenty years.  The electronic equipment is starting to wear out!  I was thrilled when this grant for a new keyboard came through!

In Kindergarten and First Grade, I spend much time helping the students understand melody that moves up and down.  We start with the "step bells," where they can see the notes move up and down.  Then we try the xylophones where we look how the size of the bar changes with the high and low sound.  Finally, the students get to play the piano and keyboard, where the keys are all the same size and flat.

The students love playing the keyboard because it is a "real" instrument!  Even though we had to wear gloves to play this year, they seemed to love their experience!

Every year, I take a song and change the words to something inspiring about our school.  The rhythm and sound functions of this new keyboard made it fun to play and have the children dance!

Thank you, Harry Debes Family Foundation, for providing this updated opportunity for the children!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I would like to update the electric keyboard in the Avalon music room with a keyboard that has many new functions and capabilities. The current keyboard is 20 years old and is starting to hesitate when I use it.

What will be done with my students

During each school year I use the keyboard to demonstrate different styles, genres and particular timbres, sounds, of instruments.
The Kindergarten and 1st graders get to take turns playing the "real" piano and an electric keyboard as they study melodies moving upward and downward.
Older students choose different sounds of instruments, rhythm accompaniments and sounds from different genres to create their own favorite style.
My piano students enjoy getting a different sound when they play.

Benefits to my students

While a "real" piano is wonderful, and electric keyboard introduces the students to a whole new world of creative possibilities. Recording our voices with the keyboard sound is just one of the new features available on this particular model.
I usually use a keyboard to perform several songs on our school performances. It's fun to create our own sound to use as an accompaniment.
I'm looking forward to letting the students help decide what accompaniment they would like for this year's school song!

Budget Narrative

If I order from "Musician's Friend" there should be free ground delivery.
