Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 364

This year has definitely been more challenging implementing my Brag Tag Reading Counts program. It has really started to take off  the second half of the year.  Everyday, I have students excited to tell me how many points they have earned.

There were times when I didn't know if I'd ever get everything in place! I had to come up with different incentives and points goals for the upper grades. I had to find a safe way for students to get books and prizes. The students really were the catalyst in making this all happen. Even before I started with the program this year, they continued to check out Reading Counts books and taking quizzes. They love getting the brag tags, reading bracelets, and earning prizes. I love seeing them reading longer and more difficult texts and finding new series! Students thus far have earned over 7500 points and read a whopping 12 million words! Some have already exceeded their goals and we are featuring them on our morning news program. We are looking forward to a celebrating their accomplishments at the end of the year.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to continue to generate excitement about reading by monitoring and celebrating our students' efforts in Reading Counts. Our Media Center incentive program motivates students to increase independent reading time resulting in improved levels and skills.

What will be done with my students

Reading Counts is a computerized program that allows students to take quizzes on books that they have read independently. Students earn points for each quiz that they pass. Each time students reach a predetermined goal, they visit the media center to be recognized. They receive a specific "Brag Tag" to display on their library lanyards. They also get to "spin the wheel" to win a prize! At the end of the year, students receive a ball chain so they can wear all of the tags they have earned. Along with the Brag Tags students will qualify for additional incentives as they earn points. For example, at ten points students earn a reading bracelet and spin for a prize. They also have their picture taken for our "Star Reader" digital picture frame which loops throughout the year. The more students read, the more tags and rewards they earn. Other incentives include bookmarks, books, lunch in the library, reading t-shirts, and a mid and end of the year celebration!
Last year was our fifth year using the incentive program. The students really love it! Our kinder students are even getting on board! Excitement and participation grows throughout the year. Our book circulation continues to increase as do our reading scores! Our plan is for this year to be even better!

Benefits to my students

Research has proven the importance of independent reading. As little as fifteen minutes a day can have a big impact especially for struggling readers. Reading Counts motivates students to read and builds confidence. It reinforces comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency skills. It also celebrates success, promotes independence, and accountability. Our Brag Tags and incentives help to motivate even our most reluctant readers to Read! Read! Read!

Budget Narrative

This is our sixth year with this program. The budget includes replacement Brag Tags. It also includes books, and other incentives such as bookmarks, reading bracelets, and pencils which are given to students throughout the year. At our end of year celebration students receive lunch, treats, books, and awards.
