Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 30

The impact and results made a huge impact on our students’ confidence.  When given the opportunity to explore any medium it allows for great creative growth thus allowing us to involve all of our Redwood Carpentry students. Our students made progress in communicating and understanding ideas non-verbally through sketch drawings. The students are developing a variety of woodworking skills as well as the ability to use different carpentry tools. The carpentry students participated in numerous projects and have used their creativeness to design their own projects. Bird houses, skateboards, plate stands, wooden boxes, treasure chest and race cars were some of the things they have made.  We had our first annual IHS Redwood Carpentry Race Car Derby and the students designed, utilized the scroll saw machine, constructed a ramp, painted, and assembled their cars for the race.  It was so exciting!  You would have thought we were at the Daytona Speedway!  The carpentry teacher developed brackets and our students made predictions for the winning car.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To practice perseverance and focus.
To develop fine and gross motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
To discover mathematical thinking (size, shape measurement), and creativity.
To grow socially and emotionally through self-confidence and respect for materials and safety..

What will be done with my students

During their career experience classes students will have the opportunity to design and construct wood working projects. We will focus on the development of mental resilience and intellectual fortitude required to resolve problems and learn from their mistakes. Our students will use basic plans for building boxes, shelves etc however they will be encouraged to put their individualism touch to each of their projects. As their skills grow and their abilities develop they may choose to attempt more ambitious projects. Identification of the different tools and their uses will also be part of the classes. A "tinker table" will also be included where students will deconstruct old electronic devices and home appliances to figure out how to fix them.

Benefits to my students

The students will develop a variety of woodworking skills as well as how to use different tools. The understanding of real fulfillment from work is experienced by meeting goals and completing them on their own. The students will be given the latitude to create their own projects however they must complete one before moving on to the next. Discipline will be a major benefit. Students will learn life long skills.
