Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 128

What is a better way to bring our Kindergarten Science curriculum to life than with a Ladybug House filled with larva?

It was so exciting to observe this life cycle transformation right before our eyes!

Simply having the ladybug larvae, pupa, and adult ladybugs in the classroom for our student scientists to observe sparked so much curiosity and engagement! Everyone was fascinated with watching them for changes. When questions about the ladybugs were asked, student scientists teamed together to look in ladybug books to research the answers. What a powerful experience where the students were asking questions about the ladybugs, reading about the ladybug life cycle, recording what they were observing in Ladybug Journals, and showing their understanding by building ladybug life cycle models. This whole process was so meaningful that it was difficult to set them free in our school butterfly garden…where they now live happily eating aphids and helping our caterpillars’ grow♥ We as educators want all our students to retain their natural curiosity and to never lose the excitement of learning something new. All those things were achieved and more! Thank you for making this possible!!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The best way to learn about something is to watch it.
My goal is to provide a live larvae kit for each of the seven classroom in our kindergarten so they can be scientists and observe the natural world.

What will be done with my students

Scientists do a lot of watching, or observing, to learn about things, especially insects like ladybugs. In this project, our students will get to observe ladybugs from their very beginning stages to adult. They will watch them to learn about them, just like a real scientists! They will predict what will happen and they will create observations and record their findings.

Benefits to my students

Our Florida science standards are to observe and record nature. Ladybugs are perfect tools to introduce science and biology to children in a fun and engaging way. By embracing the natural curiosity about bugs, we teach our students to work with nature rather than against it. They learn that even the tiniest creature can help make a difference in the natural world!

Budget Narrative

This will provide all the materials for seven classes. Shipping is included. We will be able to re-use the ladybug land each year as well.
