Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 50

Champions for Learning and Schoen Charitable Foundation, thank you for the funds for my grant. I have tested twenty-three English Language Learners (LY & LF) seniors and ALL have passed the AVANT STAMPS test. They have achieved the Silver or Gold Seal of Biliteracy.  I am currently compiling the list for twenty-seven rising seniors that I will test in the next two weeks.  The IPADS took several months to obtain because the whole world is ordering technology right now so my start was later than I anticipated.

With the AVANT test, I can see their reading and listening scores immediately. All of the candidates passed those two domains, so I felt positive about the results. I waited a little over a week to obtain their speaking, writing and overall composite score.   All of the candidates passed the test! We tested students in French, Hindi, Spanish and Russian!  I am so grateful and quite proud. The senior class of 2021, our LY and LF students, took two to three hours to take the test.

I have taken pictures of every student and each wrote a thank you which I will send to you as it is too large to download here.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Some of our English Learners do not have room in their schedules to take a world language. Many pass the FSA or get a concordant score by their junior or senior year. By passing the STAMP 4S in their native language, our successful EL students will receive a “Boost to College and Career.

What will be done with my students

I will go to the High Schools that I support and offer to proctor the AVANT STAMP 4S exam for those seniors (and possibly juniors) that pass the FSA or receive their concordant score. I will offer them the opportunity to take the AVANT Stamps 4S in their native language. They cannot use their personal devices for security purposes. Upon receiving a passing score on the exam, they will be eligible for a Seal of Biliteracy on their diploma.

Benefits to my students

Many of our Secondary English Language Learners come to us with literacy in their first language. Because our High School English Learners’ schedules are filled with courses they must take to graduate, they may not have time to take a world language. Their native language may not be available to take in our schools. The exam is offered in the following languages: Arabic, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin (simplified and traditional), Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, and Spanish.
Eleventh and twelfth grade LY students who pass the FSA (or receive a concordant score on ACT or SAT) can take the Avant STAMP 4S and prove their biliteracy in their first language. The students will then be eligible for the Florida Seal of Biliteracy on their High School Diploma.

Budget Narrative

The plan is to test two students at a time on a secure device that is not their personal device. The iPads require both a case and Air Watch Security. The price per exam is $19.90 and I plan to test 50 students.
