Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 40

When we started raising monarch butterflies in the beginning of the school year, it was a small wish to see a couple caterpillars go through the life cycle of egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, to beautiful butterfly. Several second grade classes enjoyed the miracle but several of them SOARED with the project!  At this moment, the beginning of May, my class has natured and regrew fifteen milkweed plants, planted 40 butterfly host plants, and watched over 25 VERY HUNGRY caterpillars turn into beautiful monarch butterflies. We have become Monarch butterfly experts, but most importantly, we have shared our knowledge and passion with other classes at Corkscrew Elementary School. Just this week, we connected with a fourth grade class and shared our resources so they could enjoy the butterfly lifecycle too!

I hope we can continue to grow our garden and raise Monarch butterflies for years to come!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The students will participate in a yearlong learning experience about the butterfly life cycle, migration to Mexico (by tracking the Monarch butterflies), and the importance of butterflies to our environment.

What will be done with my students

The students will observe the butterfly life cycle. We will start our journey caring for milkweed plants and discussing what a host plant is and how caterpillars and butterflies rely on milkweed. The children will have the opportunity to watch the caterpillars go from little white egg to beautiful Monarch butterfly. We will track the days as pupa and witness the butterfly as it emerges from the chrysalis. The children will learn the difference and importance of the male and female butterflies.
The students will have the opportunity to learn how to tag a monarch butterfly so they can track their migrant journey to Mexico.
This year long experience will include discussions about the importance of Monarch Butterflies in helping nature as a pollinator and food source to other animals. The children will research whether the Monarch butterflies released in Florida migrate to Mexico as they discuss climate in regions of the USA.

Benefits to my students

Learning, researching, and experiencing the life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly with have many benefits to the students. They will have "real life experience" that directly connects to the state tested standard on life cycles. The children will be able to use math skills when collecting data on the emerging of butterflies. They will get practice with map skills and geography when tracking the tagged butterflies.
They will also have mentor text in both fiction and nonfiction to help understand the Monarch and their journey to Mexico.
We will use podcast, articles, books, and real life experience to SPREAD our WINGS in second grade as they learn about Monarch Butterflies.

Budget Narrative

The above items will be used to teach three different classes about the life cycle of Monarch Butterflies and the migration of the butterflies to Mexico. We will share books and tracking tags. As we continue with the year long study, we will hopefully see our butterflies return to lay eggs and our milkweed flourish with regrowth.
