Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 60

Wow!  We have been loving the Flocabulary videos!  These videos are full of great lessons as well as a fun, catchy beat.  The videos include lessons on reading skills, math, science, social studies, and even life skills.

In the few weeks since we recieved the grant, the students have used Flocabulary lessons to learn about theme, main idea, circuits, adaptations, and much more.  They have been very excited and motivated to with these lessons.

Whether I want to assign kids a basic review lesson for homework or plan a fully integrated lesson, Flocabulary is flexible enough to use a little or a lot without feeling routine. Delivered through media that kids actually enjoy, the lessons within the songs sink in quite nicely. Sometimes we start a unit with a video that introduces the vocabulary kids need for a lesson.  It could be in simple machines, poetry, or a reading skill. I usually play the video for the whole class, then I have the kids replay with either independently or with a partner, in discussion mode, giving them the opportunity to explore ideas in more depth and learn from one another. Songs for our older kids are more dense, with nearly every rhyme containing some hard facts that they can review afterward through a variety of activities, including writing their own lyrics.

One examaple of a great lesson was on circuits.  We watched the Flocabulary video, took notes along the way, had many discussions and concluded by putting all our knowledge together to create paper circuit cards.  Oh was student engagement "energized".

Our class has been enjoying this new tool immensely.  We are so grateful for receiving the grant and the many hours of learning fun!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To engage my students and increase their achievement across the curriculum.

What will be done with my students

Flocabulary is a learning program for all grades that uses educational hip-hop music to engage students and increase achievement across the curriculum. Students will use Flocabulary’s standards-based videos, instructional activities and student creativity tools to supplement instruction and develop core literacy skills. Flocabulary's multisensory approach of using music, rhythm and rhyme is supported by a profound body of academic research.

Benefits to my students

Flocabulary is an interactive tool that students love. It provides a level of engagement so needed during these challenging times when children are in front of a computer 90% of their day. Flocabulary has the content we need to engage our students and bring our lessons to life. Flocabulary songs, videos and exercises help meet Common Core objectives in ELA and Science. Music facilitates memorization and recall of academic content, while the use of hip-hop and other culturally-relevant media increases student engagement.

Budget Narrative

The $100 will be used to pay for a 1 year subscription to use with all my 5th grade students (approx. 60). This will be used with both my in person students as well as virtual students.
