My goal is to bring the 2021-22 Sunshine State Readers and books in diversity, inclusion, and equity to my 8th Grade English Language Arts students. For my students to be successful they need books, lots of them and preferably high interest, readability and rich in diversity. "Sunshine State books are selected for for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representations." Each year a new set of books is chosen, and while our media center has these books available to students in 6th-8th grade to check out, I would love to have a class set as well as more diverse titles in my classroom for my students. This will ensure these books are available for all for my students no matter their reading or interest level to access, read, and enjoy on daily basis.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 75

Having the Sunshine State Readers and books in diversity, inclusion, and equity in my classroom has provided numerous reading and learning opportunities for my students this year. The students have learned plot development, characterization, symbolism, theme, and POV through these novels. These novels are Reading Counts books as well so students are able to take quizzes after reading them to enhance their reading comprehension. Having these books readily available in our classroom has ensured that more students have had the opportunity to read these books which they may not have otherwise had. We are so thankful to our donors Mr. and Mrs. Burke, for providing nearly 75 students in 3 different classrooms these books.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

The 8th grade Language Arts curriculum encompasses reading, writing, listening and speaking. Having a full set of the SSYR books and a more diverse library in my classroom will allow my students to choose the books they want to read and can relate to. Allowing students to have a choice in their selection of the books increases the likelihood that they will be more engaged in reading. For every book they read they will take a Reading Counts test. This is a reading assessment that measures their reading comprehension. They will keep track of the books they read as well as their score on a data tracker. The students will set individual reading goals as well as goals and rewards for their class as a whole. Along with keeping track of each book read, the students will create ‘student choice’ projects based on the novel to share with the class. These can include but are not limited to reader’s theaters, story maps, and one-pagers. These culminating projects align with the curriculum and standards for 8th grade. The anticipation is that by the end of the 2021-2022 school year all of my students will read all 15 books! This program will take place throughout the school year and will allow students to measure their growth in their reading skills.

Benefits to my students

The purpose of this grant is to create a community of readers within my 8th Grade Language Arts Classroom. There is no resource more important to my students’ success than access to high quality and engaging books. Using the funds from your organization will allow me to purchase a set of the Sunshine State Readers as well as books that are more diverse, inclusive, and equitable for my students. It will increase my students’ ability to read and make them feel proud of their reading accomplishments as they attain each reading goal. Having these books available to my students will encourage them to read independently, for understanding, and for pleasure which is the ultimate goal of reading! Thank you for your consideration in donating these funds to my classroom

Budget Narrative

The $250.00 I am asking for is to purchase the above Sunshine State Readers and books rich in diversity and inclusiveness.
