Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

Sunshine State Readers are a collection of books that are written at different levels, and help to promote independent reading. I included a charm necklace program that rewarded students charms for each book they read and passed a comprehension quiz on. Having the extra books stored in my room made it so that these in-demand books were availale to the students and the charm program helped to motivate them to read!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to have students motivated and develop into stronger readers by comprehending what they are reading. This will help them to be better prepared to take the high-stake test at the end of the year titled the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA).

What will be done with my students

This grant will be a reading incentive program to be used for the students in my fourth grade classroom. These books have a computerized quiz. Students will take tests on the books of their choice, and with a weekly pass rate of 70%, they will be able to earn a charm each week. The students will be earning charms to wear on a necklace as they successfully complete reading quizzes.

Benefits to my students

Fourth grade is a high-stakes testing year. A major part of that assessment tests students on their reading comprehension. One large benefit of this program the grant will fund is that it assesses comprehension of reading passages. The SSYRA (Sunshine State Young Readers Award) Program is to encourage students to read independently for pleasure and to read books that are on, above, and below their reading level in order to improve their reading fluency. Sunshine State books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. This will further help to prepare students to be successful on the FSA. Another benefit is that students will be motivated to read!
