Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 18

This project enabled my students to become motivated to read! Boy did they read. Fifteen out of eighteen of my students read all fifteen SSYRA books and earned a tag for each book read. They proudly display their tags on their backpacks. All fifteen of my students were featured on our school news for their accomplishments. All reading skills (phonics, comprehension and fluency) were enhaced due to this project! Several of my students loved these books so much, they went on to read many of the 3rd-5th grade SSYRA titles! Their comprehension has blown me away. Once a child enjoys reading, there is not stopping him. We had a Read-a-Thon at school. My second graders won for having read the most minutes! They read 26,078 minutes in one week. Thank you for providing such an engaging and motivating project!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is for students to develop a love for reading while improving their reading skills of comprehension (understanding what was read), fluency (reading at an appropriate rate) and decoding (reading individual words).

What will be done with my students

Sunshine State Young Readers Award Jr. is a program created by the Florida Association for Media in Education. This program was designed to develop student interest in reading for pleasure by exposing them to a wide range of appropriate literature. Sunshine State Jr. books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. Students will be able to read all fifteen of this year's books. They will work on their comprehension, fluency and decoding while earning brag tags for each book read. Students will all receive a key chain to hold their brag tags.

Benefits to my students

My students will improve their reading skills and develop a love for reading by exposing them to varied and diverse literature.
