Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 450

Our media specialist and I worked together to bring this project to life for the whole school.  She created a display in the media center with posters of the lifecycle of chickens and books all about chickes.  The incubator was on display in the media center so the students could see it everyday.

The kids were so excited about this project.  They checked the chicken area frequently and when the e-mail went out that the eggs were hatching we had to create a sign up sheet because the media center was flooded with students!

Students learned all about the lifecyle of the chicken, habitats of the chicken, and how to care for baby chicks.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is for all students to learn about lifecycles.

What will be done with my students

Lifecycles are primarily taught in second grade. The second graders will learn about lifecycles by going through the process of hatching chicken eggs. Because this will take place in the technology lab, every student will get to partake the in experience, but the second graders will have additional activities to help them learn the lifecycle process.
Students will learn how long it takes to hatch a chicken egg, what happens inside the egg throughout the 21 days it takes to hatch, and what happens once the egg hatches.
We will have an incubator in the technology lab with fertilized chicken eggs in it. We can hold a flashlight up to the egg to see what's happening inside. Once the chicks are ready to come out the students will be able to hear the chicks chirping inside of the eggs. Students will get to watch the chicks hatch and learn what happens once they hatch.

Benefits to my students

Students will understand the lifecycle and habitat of a chicken. They'll also learn what chickens need to survive.

Budget Narrative

This grant will benefit all of the students at Golden Terrace Elementary.
I have a contact in town that will donate the fertilized eggs and will take the chicks back to his farm when the project is done.
I schedule the eggs to hatch on a Monday and then return them to the farm on Friday after school.
