The brilliant mathematician Paul Erdos approached all mathematical work with this mantra, “Here I am: my brain is open.” One of the best ways of helping young children become more present with brains open to understanding connections between mathematical problem solving and real-life situations is through literature. Seacrest endeavors to create a math literature collection to support mathematicians from Preschool through Fifth Grade.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 175

Seacrest Country Day School is enormously grateful to the Shoen Family Foundation and Champions for Learning for the generous funding of the "Here I Am, My Brain Is Open!" grant. The funds for this grant have allowed Seacrest to purchase a fabulous collection of math literature which will be used in each and every classroom to support the exploration of math concepts from number identification and pattern attributes to geometry and the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Literature is an important way in which learners of all ages can apply stories to real-life mathematical problem-solving skills and the understanding of mathematical concepts.

It is difficult to say who is more excited about these beautiful new books-the children or the teachers!

Again, a sincere thank you to the Schoen Family Foundation and Champions for Learning.

Understanding Math Concepts through Literature

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The brilliant mathematician Paul Erdos approached all mathematical work with this mantra, “Here I am: my brain is open.” One of the best ways of helping young children become more present with brains open to understanding connections between mathematical problem solving and real-life situations is through literature. Seacrest endeavors to create a math literature collection to support mathematicians from Preschool through Fifth Grade.

What will be done with my students

The introduction of math concepts, ideas, procedures, patterns, and interrelatedness through literature brings abstract ideas down to the "lowest common denominator" upon which new learning can be "exponentially multiplied" for mathematicians from Preschool through Fifth Grade.

Benefits to my students

The gift of this math literature collection will benefit the Seacrest Lower School students by supporting the math curriculum. Math concepts explored through a variety of stories will provide connection-making opportunities for discussion and hands-on math work.

Budget Narrative

The grant request is for a math library collection of 80 books and the Bodart film and Scotch book tape to cover and protect the books. The books and book covering supplies will be purchased through Seacrest's Amazon Prime Account or purchased used through ThriftBooks; therefore, the purchases will be tax-exempt.
