The goal of this project is to help my students read all of the Sunshine State Books so that they may earn badges and experiences, be able to vote with other Florida students on their favorite book, and read some incredibly interesting books! This project makes the Sunshine State books more accessible to my students by having them readily available in the classroom to check out & read: at home, at school, where ever they choose! :)

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 50

This year's Sunshine State Books were loved by all of the students (and teachers!) who read them! It was especially exciting this year because many 3rd graders were able to read all of the Sunshine State Young Reader books and then transition into the 3rd-5th grade Sunshine State Books! They were very proud of themselves, being able to read chapter books that 5th graders were also reading. With each book that they read, they took a comprehension test on Reading Counts online. When they passed a test, they earned a "bag tag" (similar to a dog tag) that they get to wear proudly on a necklace chain. It was wonderful for our classroom community to be able to read the same books and share that experience with each other. With a few weeks left of school, our media specialist organized a Sunshine State Celebration where students were able to vote for their favorite book and the Collier County Elections volunteers came to set up REAL voting stations! They were so happy to be able to vote "just like adults vote for president!". This was followed by ice cream with all the topppings imaginable. To finish, each student was able to take home a copy of their favorite Sunshine State book to share with their families.  This was a special treat, made possible by our amazing donor, and we're so grateful!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to help my students read all of the Sunshine State Books so that they may earn badges and experiences, be able to vote with other Florida students on their favorite book, and read some incredibly interesting books! This project makes the Sunshine State books more accessible to my students by having them readily available in the classroom to check out & read: at home, at school, where ever they choose! :)

What will be done with my students

The Sunshine State book initiative is something that students look forward to every year. These books are chosen, engaging stories that all students in Florida set a goal to read by the end of the school year in order to vote on their favorite title. It gives them something in common to discuss while having a common goal to work toward. These books will be accessible in the classroom for the students to use at any time. We will have hands on, fun activities prepared for the students to complete after they read one of the books as well.

Benefits to my students

This benefits the students in so many ways! One way is that, as we are in our 2nd year of Leader in Me and the Seven Habits, this provides the students with a goal they can work towards, accountability advocates built in, as they'll all be working toward a common goal and can help push each other to achieve. As they read these titles, they will be increasing their reading comprehension and fluency as well as fostering a love of reading with engaging texts. It also allows our students to be able to compete with all Florida students in reading these selected stories and voting on their favorites; being a part of something bigger! Thank you for your time & consideration!

Budget Narrative

This book list budget includes all of the Sunshine State Young Reader Junior books as well as the Sunshine State Young Reader books (grades 3-5) so that even if students are reading a bit below grade and aren't quite ready for the challenge of the Sunshine State Young Reader chapter books, they can still participate successfully with the Junior books (picture books, mostly). The prices included are the best current available through Amazon.
