Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 115

The wonderful thing about graphic novels is that this often underappreciated genre is widely intriguing to readers of all ages. Through the generous grant from Champions for Learning and Suncoast Credit Union, Seacrest Country Day School was able to purchase a collection of graphic novels, all of which center on the theme of diversity, equality, and inclusion.

This collection of DEI graphic novels was presented to Mr. Dylan Hacker's Seventh Grade Literature Class and the students (and Mr. Hacker!) were thrilled! Mr. Hacker has begun developing a curriculum supporting the use of this collection of graphic novels for the upcoming year. This curriculum will be shared with both the Middle School and the Upper School English Departments of Seacrest Country Day School.

Seacrest Country Day School is grateful to Champions for Learning and Suncoast Credit Union for the funding of this very important and unique grant.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

During the 2020-21 school year, Seacrest Country Day School created a K-12 DEI Literature Collection to support the school's commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion. Recognizing the importance of graphic novels as a literary format, especially geared to Middle School and Upper School readers, Seacrest endeavors to add a selection of graphic novels to the DEI Literature Collection.

What will be done with my students

This selection of graphic novels has been curated and each is intended to inspire thoughtful and respectful dialogue, as well as a greater understanding of diversity, equality, and inclusion. The Seacrest Diversity Committee will work alongside Middle School and Upper School teachers to develop lessons and activities for each graphic novel.

Benefits to my students

A graphic novel is a book in novel-length which can be any genre, but written and illustrated in a comic book format. Recent studies indicate that graphic novels appeal to both advanced and challenged readers. When reading graphic novels, readers analyze the images in conjunction with the text in order to understand the plot and character development. By developing textual and visual reading skills in tandem, readers develop a greater understanding of the world. This selection of graphic novels is geared toward Middle School and Upper School readers with the expectation that the students will make empathetic connections between themselves and the novel characters.

Budget Narrative

The grant request is for a selection of graphic novels with resource guides and the Bodart film and Scotch book tape to cover and protect the books. All books and the book covering supplies will be purchased through Seacrest's Amazon Prime Account. The purchases will be tax-exempt and there will be no additional fees for shipping.
