Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 175

The Seacrest Country Day School Lower School teachers and their students were surprised and delighted with the gifts of Karen Katz's book entitled The Colors of Us and multicultural art supplies. How grateful we all are to the Harry Debes Family for their generous funding of this very special and important grant.

Karen Katz's book, The Colors of Us, uses lovely and creative words to describe the many unique "colors of us." This book sparks wonderful discussions and serves to instill self-confidence through self-identity. The multicultural art supplies were used by the Seacrest students throughout the year for a variety of projects in which the children expressed self-identity. The children were delighted to find their own very special colors of crayons, colored pencils, markers, and paint. A favorite project was a series of Kindergarten self-portraits and the children were delighted to surprise their parents with such authentic portraits.

The goal of "The Colors of Us" grant was to assist students in gaining a clear sense of self-identity in order to better connect with others with interactions that reflect empathy and respect. The outcome of this goal is well displayed by the happy smiles of the children, both in artwork and real life.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this grant proposal is to provide Seacrest Country Day School's Preschool through Fifth Grade classrooms with an introductory book and a variety of multicultural art supplies in order for our school community to express "the colors of us."

What will be done with my students

Ginger. Leaves in the fall. Coffee-toffee. Bronze and amber. All of these are lovely descriptors of the variety of skin tones in the wonderful book by Karen Katz entitled THE COLOR OF US. This book inspires readers to find their own unique color. Each grade level, Preschool through Fifth Grade, will be provided with a copy of Karen Katz's book as an introduction to understanding self-identity. Additionally, sets of multicultural art supplies: crayons, colored pencils, Magic Markers, and tempera paint be made available in each classroom for any and all projects in which self-identity is expressed.

Benefits to my students

When children have a clear sense of self-identity, they are better able to connect with other people and groups and to interact with care, empathy, and respect. Seacrest Country Day School is committed to supporting each child as they develop a clear sense of self-identity. Through the use of Karen Katz's book and a variety of multicultural art supplies, the Seacrest Community will express "the colors of us."
