Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 12

I could not be more thankful for the kindness in your heart to support our classroom through Champions For Learning Classroom Grants. When I applied for the grant, I truly did it with no expectations to be fulfilled and when I was awarded the grant, I was in complete disbelief and gratitude.

People like you are making an impact on a child's life. For our classroom to have the added sensory items that this grant funded, has made a huge impact on my children.

Children with intellectual disabilities have a different way of finding success in learning. My 12 students require very small group instruction, repetition and one:one support for a lot of tasks throughout the day. Gaining independence, being able to self-advocate and finding a sense of belonging in a classroom that is like family is my number 1 priority.

With this grant, my students have the access they need to sensory seeking items in order to be successful throughout the day. My students love working to earn checkmarks that lead to "free time" with an activity of their choosing. They love to build with our new huge building blocks, the floor tiles give them a way to calm their bodies and minds for a moment when needed, our musical instruments are teaching us rhythm and building confidence to perform for their classmates, our new sensory toys are used every 15 minutes for a brain break, our new fish light give the sesnory outlet many students are seeking and the magnet tiles allow them so much creativity of building "Ms. Santucci's new house".

Without you, none of this would be possible.

Thank you for changing my classroom environment to help make my students reach their fullest potential.

We are all so incredibly appreciative.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students with intellectual disabilities/autism come to school with their own set of challenges each day. The goal of this grant is to supply my students with what they need in order to be successful and meet each of their individual needs. Allowing my students access to a plethora of different sensory items better prepares them for a day of learning.

What will be done with my students

This grant will be touching the lives of my students all throughout the year. The items this grant is funding will be supplemental to our curriculum to allow for more hands-on engagement and learning. My students will use these items as independent tasks, rewards and one-on-one instruction with their teacher.

Benefits to my students

My classroom is a modified curriculum classroom with students from grades kindergarten to 2nd grade. Because of their disabilities, these students find success on a modified curriculum to meet the needs and lead to success. My students have intellectual disabilities and/or autism and need the sensory outlet in school in order to be successful. When given an outlet to touch, move, feel, squeeze, pull, etc., my students are better engaged in learning. These items allow for a calming sense that is imperative for a great day.
