Fifth grade is a pivotal year in reading. My goal is to grow the students' love of reading for pleasure by providing a variety of quality literature in the students' classroom. We will increase peer interaction by sharing with others, through conversation, ideas and thoughts, about books on the Sunshine State Young Readers List. Also, students will experience firsthand the political voting process when choosing their favorite book and comparing our results with those of other participating schools around the state of Florida.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 75

The books were purchased and distributed to the 5th grade classrooms.  The students were beyond excited!

With all the craziness going on the program got off to a slow start in the media center.

However, their interest and excitement in the Sunshine State program grew after the books were distributed to the classrooms. Students began to read the books and share the stories. I noticed the copies in the media center began to circulate more also!

It was thrilling to watch students who previously showed little interest suddenly running up to share a SSYRA book that they had completed.

Luckily, Covid restrictions were lifted and the Supervisor of Elections agreed to come in.  We had nearly 40 students complete three or more titles and earn a chance to come and vote for their favortie on a real ballot and voting machine! This was a thrilling event for everyone.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Fifth grade is a pivotal year in reading. My goal is to grow the students' love of reading for pleasure by providing a variety of quality literature in the students' classroom. We will increase peer interaction by sharing with others, through conversation, ideas and thoughts, about books on the Sunshine State Young Readers List. Also, students will experience firsthand the political voting process when choosing their favorite book and comparing our results with those of other participating schools around the state of Florida.

What will be done with my students

Fifth Grade teachers will each be given a class set of SSYRA titles and curriculum to support student learning. Classes will view a SSYRA premiere when the Media Specialist provides video book trailers on each of the 15 titles. Students will be encouraged to read as many of the books as they can throughout the 7 month period. They may write book reviews that will be shared with their peers. These may be viewed by students throughout the school. Students that read at least 3 titles, which includes at least 2 titles that will be read and discussed by the classroom teacher (this helps accommodate readers of all levels in the class), may vote in a mock election using real voting booths provided by the Supervisor of Elections. For every 3 books read, the student will be eligible for a reward provided by the Media Specialist. Those students who are successful in reading (or listening to) to all 15 titles will be invited to a special invitation only reading party. In the past, we have made this a field trip to California Pizza Kitchen and a shopping spree at Barnes and Noble!

Benefits to my students

Independent reading programs enhance students' knowledge and skills. The book trailers and awards will help motivate reluctant readers. Students will learn the importance and power of the voting process when they vote for their favorite SSYRA title. They will practice good citizenship skills when discussing the books with their peers and learn to appreciate the views of others about which is the best book. The students and classroom teachers will benefit by having the 15 quality titles easily accessible in their classroom library. These books will be able to be read by students for years to come. This program will benefit three 5th grade classrooms which will be approximately 75 students.

Budget Narrative

I am requesting 3 classroom sets of Sunshine State Young Reader Award titles (15 books).
The books will be collected at the end of the year and organized together to create literature sets for lessons that will benefit students for years to come.
