The goal of the "Chain Hawks" is to create an After School Program benefiting students in grades 6th through 8th. Disc Golf is an up-and-coming sport that promotes inclusivity, activity, and building relationships within the community. My goal is to expose students to a new sport that children of all skills and abilities can be successful in, while providing a safe and encouraging space for middle school aged students to be themselves in a positive environment.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 12

My Champions for Learning grant allowed me to share my love for the sport of Disc Golf to the Corkscrew Middle School community. I found the sport of disc golf as many did at the peak of the pandemic, and have since wanted to find a way to share my passion with my students.

The Corkscrew Middle School Chain Hawks has impacted 10-20 students through an after-school program using disc golf as a catalyst for togetherness and teamwork. Students from grades 6, 7, and 8 were able to connect with friends and make new ones while guiding and teaching one another new skills required for the sport of disc golf. The first round of after school programming had 11 participants, and I am currently working to grow our numbers. When asking students what they enjoyed most about the group they said:

"I like how close our group is and when we work together by playing doubles. My friends in the group encouraged me and the challenge of learning the technique keeps the club fun." -7th grader

“I liked that I learned more about the sport. I learned new terms and how to stand correctly.” -6th grader

Within the classroom, I have noticed a huge improvement in my relationships with the students that are in the Chain Hawks. They are eager to learn academic content and ask me about the disc golf tournaments that I travel to on the weekends. There is a higher level of respect and comradery between these students, in comparison to the students that I only interact with inside the classroom.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of the "Chain Hawks" is to create an After School Program benefiting students in grades 6th through 8th. Disc Golf is an up-and-coming sport that promotes inclusivity, activity, and building relationships within the community. My goal is to expose students to a new sport that children of all skills and abilities can be successful in, while providing a safe and encouraging space for middle school aged students to be themselves in a positive environment.

What will be done with my students

I will meet weekly with the "Chain Hawks" for an hour after school, starting with once a week and growing with interest. Each activity will be built on the fundamentals of disc golf. Drills and activities will incorporate team building and positive reinforcement. Drills will center on building the basics: driving, putting, approach, and utility shots. The goal towards the end of the year is to hold a final disc golf tournament for students who are in the program.

Benefits to my students

The benefits to my students will be endless. With proper curriculum, students can learn to make obtainable goals within the sport and track their progress throughout their middle school years and beyond. Many students in middle school struggle to find their place. With the "Chain Hawks", students can meet new people in a safe and inclusive space. Not only will students be able to get outside and be active, but will also get to improve their self-talk through working on weekly challenges that mimic what traditional disc golf courses provide.

Budget Narrative

The items above are listed as a "starter" kit for the school. The baskets will be used for targets and putting practice. The discs are separated in three categories: driver, midrange, and putter. These discs will allow students to get a feel of the disc and learn ways to throw it. The discs will be purchased through a non-profit called "UPlayDiscGolf". The carrying bag is to help transport the discs and store them between sessions.
