Lely High School has not had a theatre program in over 15 years. This year we are reigniting a passion for theatre among our students. We are starting a Theatre 1 and 2 class as well as a Drama Club. This is an opportunity to open the world of theatre to students who may have never seen a play or been exposed to all that there is in a theatrical production. Our beginnings are exciting yet very humble. While we do have support from the district and local theatre professionals, we have a need for some basic theatre supplies: texts, monologues, tech theatre materials, makeup, and various other elements. I bring semi-professional training to the course, but the tools are needed. This is a wonderful opportunity to draw back the curtains and share the spotlight with students who have performance histories and those who only look on with wonder.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 250

Through the grant, I was able to purchase materials that became the foundation of the theatre class at Lely High School. I was able to purchase classroom materials and make-up kits for teaching students the basics of acting, performing and stage make-up. Those items fueled my students toward stage performances. Last fall, some of the students performed for a local community party. Then, for the Fine Arts Holiday show, the students decorated the set, ran the sound and lights, worked as the stage crew, and performed monologues in between band and orchestra groups. For most of the students, this was their first experience on the stage. From January to March, we studied tech areas in prepartion for a spring show. Auditions were right before spring break, and rehersals began right after. With and ensemble cast of 21 and a crew of 8, we performed 3 times - two evenings for the community and one afternoon performance for the students. Over 250 students attended and many expressed interest in taking theatre next year.

I was also able to use materials and supplies to assist other schools with their performances and programs. I was  able to teach students at another high school how to apply stage make-up, demonstrating some FX make-up as well. They have invited me back to formally teach these processes.

My students and I are extremely grateful for the grant that got us started. In August, we had nothing, and we were not sure what the future held. Your grant allowed us to visioncast the possibilities. Now, nine months later, we are able to celebrate many victories. We already have a script for fall and have started developing tech work for that production. We have your generousity to thank for sparking this excitement and desire to perform.

I would like to share one last comment. When our year started, only 3 of the students had any stage experience. Now, I have students who are applying to be summer interns with Naples Players and others who are auditioning for the teen version of Something Rotten.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

These students will learn all aspects of theatre: play performance, history, memorization, improv, and collaboration. They will also learn many aspects of technical theatre: sound, lights, costuming, set design, set construction, stage management, and stage/special effects make-up. The goal this year is to have monologues and vignettes be included in the holiday fine arts show. Then, in the spring have a Cabaret Night, followed by a night of one acts later in the year. As this is the first year, in over 15 years, we need to begin small and grow our program and our talent. There is much to do and much that the students can do, if only given the opportunity.

Benefits to my students

Theatre is "a whole new world." As someone with a theatre background, I can't imagine never seeing a play or reading a script; however, this is the case for many of our students. Not all of our students are athletes or academics, they find their outlets in creative ways. For them, the theatre may be their safe place. I now have the privilege to provide that. These students will learn things that will push them out of their comfort zones and stretch their "character." They will learn that the sky is the limit, and with the right words - they can become whomever they choose to be. They can literally write their own stories. This is merely the first chapter.

Budget Narrative

Since the school has not had a program in a number of years, there are no theatre specific supplies/materials at school. The available texts are from 2004, and nothing more current is accessible. The texts are to begin our reference library for teaching and training purposes. The monologue and play books are to begin teaching the students memorization, characterization, blocking, and stage performance. The makeup kits (in a variety of skin shades) are so that students can be taught and trained in all aspects of stage makeup from realistic age-appropriate to more technically challenging elements: mustaches, beards, scars, etc.
