Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 12

Our students were able to feel, see, touch and hear the results of earning a pay check, paying bills and spending money.  This grant provided a "real-life" experience as they worked and shopped.  They participated in a "Mock" banking project and then were able to go to the Indpendent Learning Lab to practice their household skills.  Our students received job training skills at Publix, Goodwill, and the Boys and Girls Club.  The best part was reaping the benefits of earning a paycheck!! We shopped till we dropped and I don't mean that literally.  As their teacher I learned so much!  It was difficult for the students to know how to shop and to experience this independently.  They had difficulty with sizes, finding the cost of items, making decisions and choosing age-appropriate items.  We were able to choose group activities too.  We went to Shy Wolf Sanctuary and all the students were able to purchase t-shirts, and go out to eat.  We also took a bowling trip and had lunch there.  I am hoping this grant can be ongoing and incorporate other life skills next year such as taxes, tipping, etc.

Transition Class

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal for this GGHS transition program is to apply and manage use of money in the context of real-world situations.

What will be done with my students

Team members will select goals for their salary sheets provided from the Unique Learning System Transitional Core Rubrics: Communication, Employability, Daily Living, Social Strategies and Self-Advocacy. Team members will choose four goals that need to be worked on and these goals will be copied to their salary sheet, based on a rubric that will be shared with them ahead of time. These skills will now be focused on each day. A new skill may be traded in when a team member shows he or she no longer needs to work on that skill. A brief meeting will be held with each team member at the end of each day. At this time, team members will be rotated through meetings with the teacher or job coach to discuss their progress on daily goals. Team members earn money for each goal on their salary sheet.

Team members can earn up to $1.00 per day on their salary sheets or $10.00 per bi-weekly pay period. Paychecks are issued bi-weekly. This project will last for 19 pay periods.

Team members will take their mock checks to our school bookkeeper for depositing. The check will be endorsed on the back with a signature or name stamp. Money earned from the check is recorded on the check register form. On this form, team members keep a record of money earned, money spent and the balance. After each withdrawal or deposit, the mock money is counted to make sure that the amount of cash is the same as the balance on the check register. The check register form is kept in each team members personal binder.
Team members now have the responsibility to pay bills. They will pay bills required for independent living. Team members will use mock money in making school/community purchases. This may include tickets to attend high school sporting events, prom, school spirit shirts, letterman jacket, or gift cards to use at Walmart etc. Budgeting for purchases will be a key factor. Saving for more expensive activities or purchases may take an extended period of time. Team members will only be able to spend what is in their account. The actual funds will be distributed by the staff; the students will be using the mock money to learn the budgeting and payment processes.

Benefits to my students

Collier County Schools purchased a home located next to the campus at Naples High School. This home is to be utilized by students in the transition programs to develop independent living skills and to apply the costs of living independently in a real-life situation. My students have selected team members for their roommates and have designed the interior of their bedrooms and living rooms. They have chosen paint colors, floor tile/carpet and furniture. Having this "real" home to go to, pay bills and maintain by doing household chores brings reality to the many possibilities available to people with disabilities. Our students are receiving vocational job training in the community and further funding for this project will be facilitated through our class running the school store.
