Goal

My goal is to provide students with a variety of different classroom library books on their reading level that suite their interest and align with our state standards.

What will be done with my students

SSYRA Books are a hot commodity in grades 3-5! It’s not only just a school wide reading competition, but also a state wide program. Students will be able to choose the SSYRA (Sunshine State Young Readers Award) books in the order they wish to read them. We’ll keep track of each book read by having students add their name under each book they complete. Students will get a special “brag” tags to hang up in the room or keep on their backpacks after earning a passing reading comprehension score on the book. Students love the Sunshine State Young Reader books, but due to high demand often have to wait to check them out of our Media Center. I want to have a set of these high interest books at my student's fingertips to explore and read alongside with their peers. Daily reading not only helps students increases their background knowledge and vocabulary.

Along with the SSYRA books, the new Florida B.E.S.T. Standards Booklist books have been added to the list of recommended reads. These books will add content-rich text to our classroom with an emphasis on classic literature. The presence of literary content aids students to gain more understanding of the full concepts of cause and effect, the progression of a story, character development, heritage and more.

Benefits to my students

I believe that when my students find a book that interests them and engage with reading, they are working toward achieving their fluency and comprehension goals.

The Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) Program is a statewide reading motivational program for students in grades 3 through 8. The purpose for the book selections are to encourage students to read independently for pleasure and to read books that are on, above, and below their reading level in order to improve their reading fluency.

All of the books that were chosen to add to our classroom library are aligned to our state standards and are filled with texts that will help motivate students to read materials that are meaningful, thought-provoking, and prepare them to be informed, civic-minded members of their community.
