Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 0

Unfortunately, due to new protocols, we were unable to implement the project this year, but we have all the supplies in place to implement next school year. We are excited to bring the project to fruition with next year's group of 6th graders.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

For students to learn the importance of knowing your past, remembering it and recognizing it’s impact on you.

What will be done with my students

Students will read Some Places More Than Others by Renee Watson. Then students will create a display in a variety of suitcases consisting of personal artifacts representing places important to them, interviews with family members, timelines, writings, and family keepsakes.

Benefits to my students

Middle school is a time of incredible growth and change. As preteens navigate these challenging times and struggle to figure out who they are and who they want to be, it’s essential that they also know where they come from. So much of who we become is shaped by our history, not just the color of our eyes or hair, but the intangibles like our creativity, our sense of humor, or our resilience.
Interviewing grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc will give students the opportunity to spend quality time with family members, hear important family stories, and learn about family traditions and customs.
Creating the suitcase display will be a memorable way to organize and present all the information they gather. Being able to showcase their suitcases to their families will make a lasting impression on the students and their families.

Budget Narrative

The books will be purchased from kids books.com, a discount book site. We will ask for donations of suitcases and then search for used suitcase at thrift shops, Good Will and online.
The goal will be to do the project each year with incoming 6th graders.
