Goal

Students are learning that scientists work in different ways to learn about the natural world. Our goal is to learn about observational studies made by scientists from science journaling insects over time.

What will be done with my students

Students will have daily observation time with the butterfly habitat as the caterpillars become butterflies. Daily observations by each student will be complied electronically so that all observations by all 120 students are stored by day and time. Students will then publish the results of this observational study. This will be used in a larger unit of study comparing the three types of investigations; observational, comparative, and experimental.

Benefits to my students

Often when asked about science or scientists students immediately talk about beakers with colored liquid and a man in a lab coat. This unit of study focuses on the varying way real scientists work depending upon what they are studying.

Budget Narrative

This kit includes the butterfly habitat, food, and live caterpillars so that we can repeat the observations over time with multiple caterpillar groups for all six class periods.
