Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 400

My goal was to increase our students' interest in reading nonfiction texts by adding titles from the series, Who was... What was...Where was? Students love the new additions to this already popular series. Although they are chapter books, there are plenty of photos and text features to keep students interested. Titles include biographies of fascinating people from the past and present, historical, and current events, and amazing places all over the world. Before this series, the biography section was one of the least popular areas of the library.  This display, however, has become one of the most popular sections for check out!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to increase our students' interest in reading nonfiction texts by adding titles of this popular series: Who was... What was...Where was. These engaging and fact-filled chapter books include biographies of fascinating people from the past and present, historical and current events, and amazing places all over the world.

What will be done with my students

The "Who was" book series will be displayed in the media center for student check out. Students can find interesting topics like, Who was Elvis? or Mozart? or the Beatles? They can read about Legos, Nintendo, or Looney Tunes. They can learn about Area 51 or Hollywood or the story of Frankenstein! They can also read about historic events such as the Holocaust, the Vietnam War, or Pearl Harbor. Sports heroes, inventors, actors, and politicians are all subjects of these entertaining and factual chapter books. There is something for everyone! Students can use these for research, reports, or book reviews. They can also make book trailers to recommend titles.

Benefits to my students

Reading nonfiction helps prepare students for the more difficult reading tasks of the upper grades and throughout adulthood. Students learn to use headings, text features, glossaries and indexes. Nonfiction texts also help students develop vocabulary. Students learn about topics of interest and about the world around them. They are transitioning from learning to read to reading to learn. Most of the books in this series are approximately 100 pages with many illustrations and photographs. These small chapter books are just long enough to help our students increase their reading stamina without being so daunting that they can't finish them.

Budget Narrative

The Who was, What was, Where was, paperback series books range from $4.00 to $6.00 each. ! will be able to add at least 35 new books on a variety of topics depending on student interest. The book covers will extend the lives of the new books substantially.
