When we started "WE DINE TOGETHER" in room 3-140 at Lely High School back in September 2018, the goal was to meet at lunch time and offer a serene environment to everyone interested in connecting with others in a no-pressure, no-anxiety climate. Things have not changed, they have simply evolved. Through the challenging times conditioned by COVID-19, our Club has still been able to keep open doors, to offer an island of commitment, mutual support, hard work, but also laughter and fun, to set up the "FRIENDSHIP GARDEN" and be outside, to organize sports and table games, to invite everyone to relax and enjoy. OUR GOAL THIS YEAR IS TO DO THE SAME, JUST BETTER. We would like to expand the seating areas, so that teachers can bring out an entire class. We would also like to join forces with the ENGINEERING CLUB for the construction of an irrigation system for the whole garden.
We would love to keep a chess board available for anyone to play outside.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 0

This year has been rich with wonderful activities that have seen over forty-five Students involved. Beside "WE DINE TOGETHER" Members, the Team of ESE Students led by their teacher - Mrs. Tammy Chambers - took over the task of watering and tweaking the garden, thus maintaining the plants healthy and alive. In addition, as we had hoped, the Lely High School Engineering Club Members  - guided by Mrs. Angela Albrecht - were able to create a very efficient irrigation system, as well as to join some of our WDT activities.

Our world has grown and expanded. We could not have done it, however, without the support of CHAMPIONS FOR LEARNING and the grant so generously funded by SUNCOAST CREDIT UNION.

Along the way, we made some adjustments to the initially planned list of items to be purchased. We did not use any money on games (our LHS PBIS program acquired some during the school year, and we were able to borrow them). We decided not to purchase the composte container, for instance, since we could not have ensured adequate maintenance. Instead, we focused on increasing the outdoor seating with solid wooden picnic tables for more students to use. We varnished the picnic tables to protect the wood. We bought many more plants, soil, fertilizer, and sprinkling devices. We set up a recycling bin, inviting people to recycle plastic. We purchased the paint necessary to refurbish the items we already had, and to maintain them usable, safe, and pleasant to the eye. The purchased tools have been an investment for our Club and will enable us to function for the years to come under some respects.

By being engaged in hands-on activities, the Students had the opportunity to live a dimension of cohesion, collaboration, support. They have built new relationships, reinforced already existing ones. They have bonded around a project, they have debated and laughed. They have problem-solved together, they have taken over responsibilities, and they have refined organizational skills. In times of tenuous social interactions and individual mental challenges, this phenomenal group of adolescents have created opportunities for themselves and for others to feel involved, useful, cherished, and loved.

We owe a huge "THANK YOU" to CHAMPIONS FOR LEARNING for supporting our initiatives and acknowledging their value. We owe a huge "THANK YOU" to SUNCOAST CREDIT UNION for providing the financial support, without which we could not create the conditions for working in and around the "FRIENDSHIP GARDEN."

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

The students will be able to:
- plan together the setting up of the garden in after-school
hours (October);
- Go together and purchase the necessary items to grow
plants and flowers, as well as to revitalize the aesthetics
of the garden (by mid November).
- Once the garden is repristinated, organize after-school
and/or Saturday morning events to involve students in
team games, inviting others to participate (December to
April). The outdoor chessboard will attract students who
normally play on the computer to come out and share
their time and passion with others.
- Possibly work with the members of LHS ENGINEERING
CLUB to set up an irrigation system to maintain the
garden (November-May).
- Learn how good it feels to work with others for a shared
purpose, in an environment that values everyone's
contribution of opinion and effort (always).

Benefits to my students

The students will benefit from this whole experience under a multitude of aspects.
Specifically, from the SOCIO-EMOTIONAL ASPECT they will be able to feel purposefully engaged, to aim at a concrete goal, to mediate their ways in the interaction with other students and with adults.
From the ORGANIZATIONAL ASPECT they will be able to learn and consolidate a "know-how" that implies hands-on activities, division as well as interdependence of tasks, and reliability on one another. They will learn how to better manage time, money, and human resources.
ALL TOGETHER, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO CONNECT, WITH THEMSELVES, WITH OTHERS,WITH THEIR SCHOOL. This will give them a sense of achievement, a sense of GENUINE SUCCESS.

Budget Narrative

As can be noticed by examining the listed items, the budget would enable "WE DINE TOGETHER" to expand seating (2 picnic tables to be set under already standing shady trees); to replant flowers and vegetables; to renew the mulch along the paths; to fertilize the grass (which becomes very scanty and depleted without rain), as well as to maintain the plants. Students have also expressed the need for a recycling bin to encourage everyone to recycle paper and plastic in the garden area. They would also like to use a compost container to make organic fertilizer for the edible vegetables. The hose, sprinkler, and nozzle would allow for consistent watering of the whole garden area, especially in the non-rainy season. The outdoor chessboard has been suggested by students who have been normally playing chess on their laptops. They would love a chance to be outdoor and share their passion for the game with others. THANK YOU!
