Lely Academy of Engineering and Engineering Club students created an irrigation system for the We Dine Together Garden on the Lely Campus. During the first stage of the process, the goal was to get the water from the source to the garden so that students could more easily fill watering cans and water plants manually while we figured out the finer points of the next stage. During the second stage, students figured out how to setup a sprinker system that was customized for the layout and structure of the garden. This was made especially difficult since they were restricted by working on a school campus!!! They were unable to dig or even put stakes in the ground, or to lay any pipes that might possibly be a tripping hazard. They met the challenge! The irrigation system now in place implements an archway going overhead to get the water from one set of plants to the next. Students used concrete in the bottom of the planters to provide stability, and reinforced the pvc pipes by sistering them to metal pipes. It was a learning experience for all of us!!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The Lely ENGINEERING CLUB's goal is to support WE DINE TOGETHER in the creation of their FRIENDSHIP GARDEN by designing and building an irrigation infrastructure that will provide for the needs of the Garden.

What will be done with my students

Lely High School Engineering Club and Engineering Academy students will build an irrigation system for the Friendship Garden created and maintained by the We Dine Together Club. At the end of the 2020-2021 school year, Engineering Academy students were presented with the problem of limited water availability for the Friendship Garden. Students worked through the Design Process to come up with plans for an irrigation system that would be both functional and expandable, and which would meet construction requirements set forth by CCPS District policies. With the design finalized, the Engineering classes are now able to hand off the project to the Engineering Club for further development.

Benefits to my students

The Engineering Club is an extension of the Engineering Academy that allows ANY Lely student to expand their hands-on experience with Engineering. Students who participate in the Engineering Club will get to help with building the irrigation system and seeing what it takes to go from a plan to a functioning reality!! They will learn the sense of pride and accomplishment that comes from creating something that has a purpose.

Budget Narrative

Items listed above are the anticipated needs for the irrigation project based on the layout of the We Dine Together garden at the end of the 2020-2021 school year. There may be slight changes to the items required based on updates to the layout of the garden. If we have overestimated needs, we will be able to purchase supplies needed for routine maintenance and repair or for future expansion of the garden. If we go beyond the anticipated expenses, the additional expenses will be covered by the Engineering Club.
