Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 50

So, we ended up using the grant a little differently than I originally anticipated. Students still received the dog tag after they accomplished a goal in math, but the work was set up differently. I ended up receiving a grant through Reflex Math and used that as a way to show that my students had reached mastery of a multiplication number. It made my job a bit easier, and the kids LOVE the program. It was an additional incentive to reach their math goals on top of the dog tags. Students would spend several minutes a day working on their Reflex and when they would pass a multiplication number, they would show me. We would print the certificate for their leadership binders, and they would receive their dog tags. It worked beautifully! Students can work at their own pace and they continue to make progress every day.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to have students achieve multiplication fact fluency for numbers 0-12. By the end of the school year, all 40 of my students will be able to recall multiplication problems fluently and efficiently.

What will be done with my students

I have created a goal-setting program that involves students growing more fluent in their multiplication fact fluency. All students will begin by multiplying 0's. Once they have mastered their 0 facts, they will move on to 1's and so on through their 12 facts. As students progress through each number, I believe it is important for students to understand that they are accomplishing fluency and working toward a goal. After each number is mastered, it is my plan to give students a Brag Tag - a plastic tag with a cool design that shows off their accomplishment. Students already receive brag tags for reading, why not math?! As each student progresses, they will earn a Brag Tag for that accomplishment.

Benefits to my students

Not only will these Brag Tags make my students better mathematicians, but it will give them something physical to attach to their goal. Students will receive a Brag Tag after every number is mastered beyond 2's. (For example, students will receive a Brag Tag for mastering their 0-2's, 3's, 4's, etc.) This will give students a goal to work on as well as providing motivation to conquer the next challenge. At the completion of their mastery, students will receive the "Mathlete" star Brag Tag (see picture). At this point, students should be fluent in their multiplication fast facts, which will help across all other math areas such as division, decimals, fractions, etc.

Budget Narrative

I have broken down the Brag Tags that students will be receiving as they continue through the Multiplication Fluency Challenge. I have listed the price of the Brag Tags as they have been quoted on the School Life orders website. I am ordering 50 of each Brag Tag to accommodate my math classes of 42 students, plus any additional students that will enter my class during the challenge. This also accounts for any lost Brag Tags that students might misplace.
