The Strum Fun Project has been a huge success!  Fifth grade students have been engaged in creative, imaginative music classes.  They have been developing a deper sense of musicianship and comaraderie.  We have weekly hands on ukulele paractice during class.  Students enjoy working independently and in groups to increase their skills.  I look foward to being able to offer this fantastic instrument to my future fifth graders for years to come!  What a wonderful opportunity this has been.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of the Strum Fun project is to provide the awesome experience of playing ukuleles to the 5th grade students of Corkscrew Elementary for years to come. Ukuleles will be incorporated into the existing curriculum to enhance the learning that currently takes place. Students will be engaged in creative, imaginative general music classes and will be able to develop a deeper understanding of musical concepts such as meter, beat, rhythm, notation, styles of music, and instrument families. All that is missing is the ukulele!

What will be done with my students

With the purchase of ukuleles, I will be able to provide hands on practice of the instrument. Lessons will begin with teaching the students the proper care and handling of the ukulele. Instruction will include the correct playing position and a brief history of the fretted string instrument. Students will practice proper plucking and strumming technique, and left-hand placement. They will learn the purpose of frets. How to play a melody and play chords. One of the many opportunities’ students can experience with ukuleles is having the ability to create original music and share compositions with students and offer feedback to each other. Students will demonstrate gains in knowledge and music skills through classroom evaluation and performance

Benefits to my students

: Ukuleles will give my student musicians a chance to try something new and creative that will enhance the existing curriculum. The Strum Fun project is intended to serve students in grade five. In my school that can be 125 students a year getting to experience the joy of musical expression. The benefit to the Corkscrew student population will far outweigh the cost of the project. This unit of study will help capture the interest and imagination of the twenty-first century learner. Imparting knowledge and a lasting love of music to the students. This project will also allow students to learn skills beyond music including leadership, collaboration, goal setting, and pride in belonging to a group. Ukuleles are a great way to support self-esteem in ways that will have a lasting impact. They will demonstrate a love and enjoyment of music by the excitement they show as they enter the music class eagerly waiting to play the ukulele. Ukuleles will allow students to experience first and then intellectualize by providing activities focused on the major standards-based concept areas.
