Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 335

My semester 1 Art students were eagerly excited  with creating this Gratitude  Art Mural.  The students intially worked independently on their designs.  As a group, they learned how to work as a team and cultivated critical thinking and problem solving skills when incorporating all of the pieces into one complete art piece.

They were introduced to the works of contemporary artist Thank You X and Pop Artist Andy Warhol.  Discusssions were had on how these two artists styles were similiar and how their art inspired the community.

I would like to add additional pieces to this mural as the year progresses with my 2nd semester students.

It truly has been a great experience for everyone involved with this process.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students will build a sense of community with their grade level peers through the creation of a mural. Every Art student, grade 6-8, will create one mural. Each student will contribute to the creation of the group mural by drawing and painting a section and contributing one aspect to the finished piece. The murals will be displayed in the school.

What will be done with my students

Students will look at artworks by artist THANK YOU X and discuss how these works can influence the group project.
Thank you X is a street artist who got his name by paying homage to Pop Artist, Andy Warhol. He added his name to Warhol’s portrait as a gesture of gratitude to Warhol’s Art.
Students will sketch out their concept for the mural on a 9x9 square cube. Students will begin to paint the background of their square so that each student participates in this phase of the mural. Lastly, the children will create a small individual element to be incorporated into the finished mural.

Benefits to my students

Building community in a school and individual grade levels is imperative to students because it establishes a feeling of reassurance, a sense of originality and pride. As the students work collaboratively on their grade level murals they will learn to work as teams and cultivate critical thinking and problem solving skills.
