Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 57

Pure JOY! Children learn by doing... I can't imagine a more engaging way to teach STEAM than building and flying a kite! This grant provided the perfect hands-on culminating activity for our study of weather and gravity. Each of my kindergarten students collaborated with their 2nd grade buddy to build and fly their own kite. There was lots of problem solving, engineering adjustments, application of science skills. and lots of patience endured to get each kite in flight. Every student gleamed with a sense of pride, joy, and accomplishment as they watched this object, they created fly and could feel the power of the wind at their line.  These kite kits provided a sense of wonder, excitement for learning and connection with the natural elements that will be forever cherished as a favorite learning memory.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To provide a Sensory STEAM Experience that will give flight to students' imaginations and creativity! Kite building and flying is a fun, creative, collaborative STEAM challenge. Students will learn about science, physics, weather, and ecology. Kite flying also helps develop hand-eye coordination, kinesthetic awareness, gross motor skills, along with patience and diligence to finish a task.

What will be done with my students

Kindergarten students will synergize with their 2nd grade buddies utilizing their STEAM skills and Leader in Me Habits to design, build, and fly their own individual kites. After researching the perfect weather conditions, a special day will be chosen. Kindergarteners along side their buddies will meet with kites in hand and run across our school field filling the sky with our cool creative creations!

Benefits to my students

Students will deepen their understanding of wind, lift, drag, weight, stability and directionality as they collaborate using their STEAM skills. They will learn how kites have been a part of the human story...a connection to the wind and sky. This is a great learning opportunity to figure out how to work around the bumps and solve problems to complete a goal. Kite flying is also mentally stimulating and quite beneficial. Research has shown that flying a kite can stimulate areas of the brain involved in memory, learning, and emotion. Students will also earn a sense of pride, joy, and accomplishment as the kites they designed and built catch the wind and soar into the sky!!
