Understanding weather is a big part of fifth grade science and what better way for students to learn than with daily real-life experience! Our goal is for students to use this tool - a combination barometer, thermometer, and hygrometer - to measure and record weather data each day. With this data, students will be able to predict weather and patterns and gain a better understanding of how air pressure, temperature, and humidity affect the weather in our community.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 50

Students were able to use these weather stations to monitor and record the temperature, air pressure, and humidity and various points thoughout the day. This allowed them to practice important scientific skills such as making observations, recording data, analyzing data, and communicating results. They were also able to gain additional insights into weather trends we experience in our area and utilize the changes in measurements to predict weather changes.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Understanding weather is a big part of fifth grade science and what better way for students to learn than with daily real-life experience! Our goal is for students to use this tool - a combination barometer, thermometer, and hygrometer - to measure and record weather data each day. With this data, students will be able to predict weather and patterns and gain a better understanding of how air pressure, temperature, and humidity affect the weather in our community.

What will be done with my students

This weather center kit is an easy-to-carry tool students can use to record the weather outside each day. Students will have a hands-on tool to use to record their weather data. Then, the data can be shared and discussed as a class. Students will learn to see patterns in the weather that result from changes in temperature, humidity, and air pressure.

Benefits to my students

Students learn best when they are able to take learning into their own hands. This simple weather station will have a huge impact on our fifth graders. Not only will they gain experience reading and using these weather tools, but they will benefit from the responsibility of taking these readings on their own. True understanding comes from doing!

Budget Narrative

Each of the two Science teachers at NPE will receive one of these weather station kits for their students to use.

We thank you for your kind consideration of our grant.
