My goal is to incorporate literature and informative texts as instructional materials/content and use all genres of text to encourage students to be lifelong readers and lifelong learners. The books that I am requesting are ones that are recommended within the B.E.S.T. ELA Standards. These books will be used to increase the rigor of my literacy instruction, and better prepare students to understand complex text.
Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards for ELA are built on the following premises: *English Language Arts is not a discrete set of skills, but a rich discipline with meaningful, significant content, the knowledge of which helps all students actively and fully participate in our society. * The texts students read are meaningful and thought-provoking, preparing them to be informed, civic-minded members of their community.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

My students will be exposed to a wide range of genres that demonstrate exemplar writing. The books will provide my students with background knowledge in topics that are covered in content areas to help build vocabulary and schema. Giving students the opportunity to read nonfiction and literary texts that reinforce and scaffold what they are learning in their content areas will give them the schema to which they can tie new learning.

Benefits to my students

Reading books aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. It helps them develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word.
Civic-focused texts are the source of building background knowledge and vocabulary in the lower grades. They are designed to reinforce civics instruction by providing quality texts to which students can apply their developing reading and reasoning skills.

Budget Narrative

The cost is for thirty-one books from Amazon and Barnes and Noble and includes tax.
