My goal is to obtain a 3-D printer that will allow my students to learn how the 3-D printing process works and therefore be able to operate it independently. The students will then be able to create/print keychains that they will sell. The money that is made will be given to a charity of the students' choosing.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 500

Students were able to help build and create small items using our 3D printer. The most powerful learning that took place was not just the creation of the items but the students themselves built the printer and tried troubleshooting problems. Learning how to problem solve is a skill that is necessary to life and this project allowed students to practice Students had to follow directions and begin with the end in mind to put together the printer, which included very technical steps. They communicated within a small group to discuss next steps and brainstorm how to solve the problems they faced. The items that were printed will be added to an inventory and when we have enough, we will sell to the students in the school. The money raised will go to a charity of the student’s choice and is still to be decided. Having a 3-D printer has elevated our technology equipment here at school and given students the opportunity to make their learning hands-on. We are extremely  grateful!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to obtain a 3-D printer that will allow my students to learn how the 3-D printing process works and therefore be able to operate it independently. The students will then be able to create/print keychains that they will sell. The money that is made will be given to a charity of the students' choosing.

What will be done with my students

This project will take place over the entire course of the year. The direct group of students affected are part of a Technology and Robotics Leadership Club that meets once a month for the remainder of the year. Although, this project can extend for years to come as well. As a technology teacher, this project directly relates to the Florida Computer Science standards and as a Leader in Me school also allows students to own their own learning and give back to their community.

Benefits to my students

This project will allow my students to be truly invested in the creation and production of items from beginning to end. Students will be genuinely engaged in the process which will create long lasting learning. Students will also be able to give back to their community and therefore create a greater sense of belonging.
