In our emerging Spanish language program, students begin their journey in second language acquisition at an early age. It is our goal to expose children to the different cultures of countries whose primary language is Spanish, to expose them to the language its structure and to be able to communicate both verbally and in written form by the end of 3rd grade at a basic level. Besides offering students an opportunity to learn speech and the written form, it is also our goal for students to learn how to read Spanish simultaneously through reading groups, reading out loud, parent/child read aloud. Our goal is to have a full classroom library where students can borrow books in Spanish class to take home and read with parents/ guardians. My goal is also to be able to offer students of different levels of books that they can read during our Spanish class and to be able to create group read alouds with them.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 200

As a result of having a diverse library in our classroom, students have had the opportunity to read books in Spanish and to become curious about their reading journey. Having been able to purchase books that are at the reading level of all of my Native Spanish speakers has been incredible. These students in particular have been able to take home a different book and bring the joy of reading in Spanish to their homes. Since a lot of my native speakers come from other countries and some are first generation, having a reading nook/library in our classroom has made Spanish class more challenging for them. For those native Spanish Speakers who did not know how to read, they have had the opportunity to read level-appropriate books to further develop these skills. Besides the impact on our native speakers, on a broader level, having a library in Spanish class has allowed all of my students to become curious about Spanish in a way that they had never thought they would be. By mirroring topics in their homerooms we were able to read books that they were reading in their other classrooms but in Spanish. A few examples include "The cat in the hat" and "The very hungry Caterpillar". Incorporating the merger between their homeroom and what they are learning in Spanish class has significantly increased the level of learning and Spanish language acquisition. I have also had the chance to start small reading groups with a select number of students and we read books like Jack and the beanstalk in Spanish. One of my favorite parts of the library is that many of the books I chose also introduced students to culture. We read books about the typical foods of Mexico and other countries. We also read a kid-friendly version of Don Quijote! The pictures show how students have enjoyed reading and how much of an impact it has made. I am very thankful that the grant was fulfilled and to have been able to see how students grew as a result. Not only has this impacted the students this year but it will be something that will continue to impact students for many years to come.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

Students will have 10-15 minutes of group reading time during their Spanish instruction. Students in higher grades will be able to complete the process of reading and writing using the classroom library. This additional reading will support their existing reading and writing process they are already learning in English Language Arts and will mirror to further inculcate plot, climax, setting, prediction, summary just to name a few. These same students will take home a book on a weekly basis to complete a written project in relation to their reading lesson. These books will also be made available in the school digital library for students who are studying at home virtually as well as for other Spanish language students in the entire school.
In addition in the lower grades, the books in our Spanish Class library will be used for carpet read aloud time. It will also be used to provide students with silent/quiet time while continuing learning. For the smaller grades including Pre-school through first, the classroom library will offer an opportunity for students to begin learning about the importance of reading as they begin to develop these skills and practice.

Benefits to my students

Students will learn how to read and will connect speech to text. Many of the books we will read are books students are familiar with in English and will be read at the same time as they will read it in English Language Arts Class. Reading is one of the most useful tools we have in learning, through reading students will have access to language, culture and literacy without being dependent on travel and or native Spanish speakers. These books will help parents implement what we are learning in the classroom as they continue their learning at home regardless of whether parents speak the language. Reading books in Spanish offers students additional exposure to the language that is accessible and keeps them away from heavy overuse of technology. It also supports children's existing routines at home while engaging them in a new opportunity to learn.

Budget Narrative

The selection of books will offer an opportunity for our classroom library to be full of different genres, topics and to include a variety that will satisfy any reader including our picky readers for many years to come. $535.17 would include the cost of the books and shipping.
