Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 75

Dearest Schoen Family,

My students walk into my classroom everyday, asking when we will start the "Geo Race" as they call it. After we've completed our lesson for the day, my students quickly run to the wall maps around the classroom with their peers. The enthusiasm they show for this activity is an absolute joy to witness as their teacher! The "Geography Race Around the World" is hands-down my students most favorite activity in class; however, they sometimes became frustrated locating these places on the wall maps in our classroom, because they all varied in their geographical content.

It is quite difficult to put into words the impact that your donation has made on every single one of my 6th and 7th Grade U.S. History and Geography students! Because of your generous donation of Apple Ipads, my students are even more eager to participate, as these iPads have given my students a piece of technology that allows them to locate EVERYTHING on the digital maps for their beloved activity. Now, they have the most updated and recent maps of everything around the world and are able to locate each and every detail they need to answer their given geography questions. The enthusiasm and knowledge within my students has grown tremendously over the past month alone, with the use of the digital atlas and maps that these ipad resources have provided for my students. In fact, the day my students were surprised in my classroom with YOUR grant from Champions For Learning, they asked me everyday when the generous gift from the Schoen Family would arrive for their Geo Race!

WE thank you from the bottom of our hearts, for your generous donation to our classroom, but also for the core value you've instilled in my students, in regards to "giving back" and "paying-it-forward" as someone did for Mr. Schoen! I actually shared your video with my students, explaining WHY your family feels so passionate about donating to students and their education, as the anonymous person did for Mr. Schoen's college education! What a beautiful and impactful story Mr. Schoen has shared with our children and his story has most definitely left quite an impactful impression on MY students and I can't thank you enough for that!

Sincerely,

Ms. Meghan Schimmel & My 6th and 7th Grade students from Seacrest Country Day School

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Through the digital Randall and McNally Atlas application and the IPAD Pro tablets, my students will be able to locate all geographical features in order to locate the smallest countries, cities, states, and geographical features, as well as answer our higher order level of geography thinking questions and skills.

What will be done with my students

My 6th-7th grade students are fortunate to have Geography as one of their core classes in Middle school, which also prepares them for their following United States and World History classes. While our classrooms have many maps, globes, and atlases, it is difficult for my students to locate all the geographical features, because they’re either too small, or the particular maps do not contain those specific geographical features that the students are working in their cooperative learning groups to locate during our “Maps Race Around The World” geography skill building activity. By having the large iPad pros in their cooperative learning groups, my students will be able to zoom-in on a particular area and be able to locate the specific country, city, river, lake, mountain range, peninsula, etc.

Benefits to my students

Why is geography important in our elementary and Middle School classrooms? Geography helps students focus on the patterns and processes that connect them to the world by teaching them to pose and answer geographic questions. “Where is it located?” “Why is it there?” “What is significant about its location?” “How is its location related to the location of other people, places, and environments?” Geography skills teach students to inquire. They equip our children to address and solve problems. Geography has taken a backseat in many school curriculums and it’s extremely important for students to have an understanding of the relationships that exist between cultures, as well as understand where those cultures are located in the world. Students can google any country in the world and find its location; which is why geography skills matters more now than ever, because students need to know human geography, as it pertains to current events around the world, by using actual maps. They need to truly understand HOW to locate places on an actual map.
