My grant request would fund the beginning of the Percussion Club in our Leader In Me school initiative. We will be in our fourth year as a Leader In Me school. We are offering teacher sponsored clubs for students to choose to be a part of to help them find their voice, synergize, as well as utilizing other Leader In Me habits. This cross-curricular club connects the fun and creativeness of bucket and stool drumming to all the STEAM areas of focus. As a previous percussion student, I look forward to sharing my interest and skills with the students at Manatee Elementary School.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 0

Wow! What a wonderful experience I had being able to bring the excitement and creativity of Bucket Drumming to the MES Leader In Me club days! Students from 3rd, 4th, 5th and MC3 classrooms were able to participate in this club by their own choice. From the very beginning, we worked on the different connections and information learned and shared by music; specifically, percussion. We made math and science connections from the very beginning as I even shared my own personal drum from high school. One of the students in my group was chosen for the district elementary drum group. After having one year of bucket club experience, I look forward to continuing this in upcoming years.

As we wrap up the year, the students have brought their individual interests and talents together and have become a group that can synergize and produce some awesome bucket beats!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My grant request would fund the beginning of the Percussion Club in our Leader In Me school initiative. We will be in our fourth year as a Leader In Me school. We are offering teacher sponsored clubs for students to choose to be a part of to help them find their voice, synergize, as well as utilizing other Leader In Me habits. This cross-curricular club connects the fun and creativeness of bucket and stool drumming to all the STEAM areas of focus. As a previous percussion student, I look forward to sharing my interest and skills with the students at Manatee Elementary School.

What will be done with my students

Science connections are numerous with the main areas being energy, sound, force, motion, vibration, variables, scientific method and conducting investigations. Math is tapped into with a focus on counting rhythms, patterns, fractions using time signatures and learning the value of each note. Engineering can be studied by looking at how a drum or any percussion instrument is constructed. Art and Music come together with a visual effect of playing a percussion instrument, the sounds produced and the creativity of how we are pulling it all together.

Benefits to my students

After working on all of these areas of focus, my group of students will have not only found their voice, but also sharpened the saw in numerous academic areas.

Budget Narrative

The items above will cover the needs for the club. The buckets, putty and music will be used year after year. Drumsticks will be given to each student in the club.
