Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 1000

This was the pilot year for the program as lessons and materials were developed for 10 bins/cultures around the world. They contain lesson plans, authentic samples of the art, examples of the project, and non-consumable materials. These lessons and materials will be used primarily by middle school art teachers teaching Art in World Cultures, but can also be used by middle school art teachers teaching Art 2D and Art History…which is all of the middle school art teachers in the county. Approximately 1000-1400 students per semester will be participating in these lessons.

The CPALMS (Florida State) description of this course is: Students survey selected works of art, utilitarian artworks, and architecture from around the world. Students explore both the traditional forms and contemporary interpretations, including analysis of purpose, theme, cultural and historical context, formal qualities, symbols, and media. Students explore and compare various cultural responses to universal themes, as evidenced in their art. Students also consider the value of preserving these works in today’s museums and other public buildings, private collections, and in digital format. This course may incorporate hands-on activities and consumption of art materials.

In August, at our back-to-school professional development meeting, the middle school teachers will be trained on the use of these bins, participate in developing additional lessons, and begin checking out the bins for use in their classrooms.  The bins will then circulate through the schools during the course of the year.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To provide authentic examples, guidance, and support for hands-on art activities for all of our middle school art teachers and students enrolled in Art in World Cultures

What will be done with my students

Students will learn about a variety of world cultures and their art. Students will have the opportunity to create art in the style of authentic art from these different world cultures. These cultures/this art will be from the home countries of some of our students, including, but not limited to the following examples:
Haiti-oil drum art, sequined Vodou flags, painted tap tap busses
Mexico-Amate bark painting, Huichol yarn painting, Papel picado, sugar skulls
Africa-Kente cloth, Ankora wax prints, animal masks, Sabai woven grass basket
China-Asian brush painting
Japan-Gyotaku fish prints
Egypt-hieroglyphics, pyramids, profile portraits
Native American-Seminole patchwork doll, coil pottery, weaving

Benefits to my students

Students will be exposed to art beyond the traditional 'famous artists' of Europe and America. They will be provided with a window into the culture and the authentic art from that culture. This grant will fund a series of traveling 'bins' that will move from middle school to middle school with historical information, art examples, lesson plans, and materials.

Art in World Cultures is taught in our middle schools.
NOTE: My direct supervisors are now Skip Pardee in Fine Arts and Elizabeth Alves in Teaching and Learning.

Budget Narrative

ALL of the materials requested in this grant are non-consumable. The individual schools will provide the consumable materials. The Fine Arts department will provide the samples, lesson plans, and other non-consumable materials, like the GYOTAKU rubber fish and the cardboard weaving looms.
