My goal is to bring the 2022-2023 Sunshine State readers to the 6-8th Grade Students at Gulfview Middle School. For the students to be successful this year they need books, lots of them and preferably high interest and readability.
“The Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) Program is a statewide reading motivational program for students in grades 3 through 8, in a collaborative effort between the Florida Association of Media in Education (FAME) and the Florida Department of Education (DOE). Sunshine State books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation.” Each year a new set of books is chosen, and while our media center has these books available to students in 6th - 8th grade to check out, I would love to have multiple copies to ensure the books are available for all students to access, read, and enjoy!

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 600

Having the Sunshine State Readers at GVM has provided numerous reading and learning opportunites for the students this year. The students have learned plot development, characterization, symbolism, and theme. These novels are also reading counts books so students were able to take quizzes after reading them to encourage and promote reading comprehension. Having these books avaible to our students has ensured that more students have had the opportunity to read that thye may not otherwise have had. We are so thankful to our donor for providing over 600 students these reading opportunites.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

The 8th grade Language Arts curriculum encompasses reading, reading across genres, and vocabulary. Having full sets of the SSYR books will allow students to choose the books they want to read from the set. Allowing students to have a choice in their selection of the books increases the likelihood that they will be more engaged in reading. For every book they read they will take a Reading Counts test. This is a reading assessment that measures their reading comprehension. They will keep track of the books they read as well as their score on a data tracker. The students will set individual reading goals as well as goals and rewards for their class as a whole. Along with keeping track of each book read, the students will create ‘student choice’ projects based on the novel to share with the class. These can include but are not limited to reader’s theaters, story maps, and one-pagers. These culminating projects align with the curriculum and standards for 6th - 8th grade. This program will take place throughout the school year and will allow students to measure their growth in their reading skills.

Benefits to my students

The purpose of this grant is to create a community of readers within the Language Arts Classroom There is no resource more important to students’ success than access to high quality and engaging books. Using the funds from your organization will allow me to purchase multiple sets of the Sunshine State Readers. It will increase students’ ability to read and make them feel proud of their reading accomplishments as they attain each reading goal. Having these books available will encourage them to read independently, for understanding, and for pleasure which is the ultimate goal of reading! Thank you for your consideration in donating these funds to the ELA Department at Gulfview Middle School.
