Many students in our community do not have the opportunity to explore fun extracurricular learning events in science or the arts. Both science and art foster different skills and interests in students. It is my hope to bring both together and create a club called “STEAM Squad” for students. Students will express themselves through their artistic creations and work together on challenges in science. Hopefully, these experiences will foster a life-long interest in art and science.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 30

Thank you for your generous grant to this great group of students!

The STEAM SQUAD Science Club had a fun and busy year!  Students met weekly to participate in many fun and engaging experiments.  They also created lots of cool items to sell. However, due to a conflict were not able to sell the items.  Instead, the students will be handing them out to over 100 of our teachers and staff members for "Teacher Appreciation Week".

Aside from their hard work making gifts for the teachers, students also utilized their leadership skills at two events.  The first event was the STEAM Conference in Naples, where STEAM SQUAD members ran a booth where families could build Lego balloon rockets.  The second was at a Feeder Pattern event, where they showed families how to use a Makey-Makey device to operate games and a banana piano.

Experiments students enjoyed were slime, creating epoxy, soap, and bath bombs.  They also enjoyed using photo light paper to make collages, books to learn how to journal, and participate in many other creative and scientificastic club meetings.

Thank you again for your open-hearted donation!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Many students in our community do not have the opportunity to explore fun extracurricular learning events in science or the arts. Both science and art foster different skills and interests in students. It is my hope to bring both together and create a club called “STEAM Squad” for students. Students will express themselves through their artistic creations and work together on challenges in science. Hopefully, these experiences will foster a life-long interest in art and science.

What will be done with my students

With the generous donation from this grant, I will incorporate art and science into a STEAM Squad Club that takes place outside of school hours. Last year, we had a science club which many students enjoyed. However, we were limited as to the types of projects we could create due to a lack of funds. Thus, we will use the grant funds to complete various STEAM projects each week. Each project or experience will focus on interdisciplinary areas within STEAM, (science, technology, engineering, art, and math).

Student projects will include science experiments (such as slime, team engineering challenges, and exploring the outdoors). Students will create designs and practice using a scan and cut machine to make vinyl decals and apparel. Students will use the epoxy to create keychains and bookmarks, among other items.

After students design and create their art projects, they will sell them at our school’s entrepreneurship fair at the end of second semester. Funds raised will support a student field trip second semester. The field trip destination will be voted on and decided by student participants and will have a STEAM component/activity as well. In addition, 10% of funds raised will be donated to a non-profit of the students’ choice. Students will continue to participate in fun and engaging science and art lessons second semester as well.

Moreover, students will be required to participate in the school science fair and present their project to judges. They may choose any project that fits into the STEAM framework. Students will work on science fair projects mostly outside of club time, although some of our meetings will be focused on consulting and advising students on their projects.

Benefits to my students

Research shows that STEAM activities are very helpful for students. They are said to provide “access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking,” according to EducationCloset, a digital learning desination for educators. “The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process,” (EducationCloset). STEAM utilizes benefits from art, science, technology, math and engineering, bringing them all together to make new connections and learn in new ways.
