Original Grant Overview

Goal

Sixth, seventh and eighth Grade students will design, create, and install ceiling tiles in public spaces on the school campus. Some of the public spaces will include main office, media center, cafeteria, and the art classroom. The ceiling tiles “beatification initiative” will demonstrate how art connects us to each other, the community, and the world!

What will be done with my students

Students will learn the design processes that artists use when creating public art. Students will then design a ceiling tile that will be installed on the school campus. Students will be encouraged to think about the installation space of the ceiling tile and of the viewing audience. The students will be asked to incorporate “Leader in Me” theme to spread Social, Emotional Learning, and (SEL) messages. Once the students’ images are designed, they will draw and paint the tiles. The students will assist the campus plant manager with the installation of the art. Lastly, the artists will look up and experience the power of their contributions of art to their community.

Benefits to my students

Students will learn about careers that are available for creative people including graphic design and public art. They will learn how as artists they can create images that will translate into publicly displayed works of art. Students will understand and experience the power of publicly displayed art by seeing first-hand how their creations affect others. Oakridge Middle School family will be able to enjoy the ceiling tiles as a permanent art installation and enjoy the tiles for many years of come.
