As we all know reading is important and allows students to reinforce their comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency skills. Empowering students to pick books of interest and on their own individual reading levels will only set them up for success. When we are able to celebrate reading we then send a message of how fun it can be and how important it is.

We are so thankful that Publix Supermarkets funded this grant. It is extra special because all the children know Publix and what a valuable business of the community they are and my husband is a currentl employee and has been with the company for 25 years. That made it even more special! The kids are absolutely loving reading and earning reading counts points. Students have been setting thier own goals and tracking thier own progress. The Brag Tags are positive incentives that celebrate student success.

We have many children that have surpassed their goals and even the Kindergartners and 1st graders are eager to participate.

We have been able to create a culture that celebrates and values a love for reading. We are so thankful that this grant was funded!

Goal

The goal of this project is to motivate students to read and to inspire reading success for all students.

What will be done with my students

This grant will be a reading incentive program to be used for the students at Shadowlawn Elementary. The students will choose library books on their independent reading levels from the Shadowlawn Media Center. Each learner will read their books at their own pace and then will complete a short reading counts quiz to verify comprehension. Once students pass the quiz then they will earn points. The more they read the more points they earn. The students will set goals and will be responsible for keeping track of their progress. When they get to certain point increments then they will get their brag tags for their necklaces.

Benefits to my students

The key to ensuring success in reading is to personalize student practice, set goals, a provide a means to monitor progress towards those goals. Students will benefit because this goal will help improve their reading proficiency by improving vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency skills. Reading and receiving brag tags will help students build personal responsibility toward increasing their reading achievement by allowing them to set quantifiable reading goals and track their own progress. The students will also see that they are part of a whole school community not only tracking their own progress but will see how their progress affects their classroom, grade level and school wide goals as well. The Brag Tags are celebrating the students success!
