My classroom goal is to have 100% of my students actively engaged in creating art.
One way to achieve this goal is to use neon art materials and blacklights to create a buzz in the art room and a presentation goal at the end of the semester or a time (which coincided with conferences or a school event). Like it or not, visual arts sometimes need a gimmick to get the community pumped about going to see an art show.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 1000

The entire school benefited from this event.

Students voted on event theme-they chose (space theme)

Each student in my art class was able to draw, paint and help with install

Process:

  • the first class of the days students drew the images
  • the rest of the days classes painted the mural in small groups
  • then they repeated the process until 11 panels were completed

The MCI and MC2 students created a panel each.

We installed the panels in an empty classroom and invited the entire school to view the event.

We played music and turned on the black lights.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My classroom goal is to have 100% of my students actively engaged in creating art.
One way to achieve this goal is to use neon art materials and blacklights to create a buzz in the art room and a presentation goal at the end of the semester or a time (which coincided with conferences or a school event). Like it or not, visual arts sometimes need a gimmick to get the community pumped about going to see an art show.

What will be done with my students

Students will learn the science behind fluorescent materials and neon lighting. They will learn the design processes that artists use when creating public art. The students will use an assortment of fluorescent art media to draw and color a themed glow show (possibilities: under the sea or garden). In addition, they will spend 2 weeks working on artwork, backdrops, and advertisements in the dark to get themselves and their families excited about the show at the end of the semester or a time, which coincides with conferences or a school event.

Benefits to my students

Students will learn about careers that are available for creative people including collaborative and public art. They will learn how artists incorporate science to create art that will translate into publicly displayed works of art. Students will understand and experience the power of publicly displayed art by seeing first-hand how their creations affect others. Oakridge Middle School family will be able to the enjoy the results: a magical show that hopefully creates quite a few "Whoas" and "Ahs”!
