Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 130

The 3rd graders at VME just love the handheld microscopes. We used them heavily during our science units on plant structures and roles of plant parts. We set up rotations throughout a classroom to view spores, seeds, flowers, stems, leaves, etc. Students retained more knowlege of these parts and structures by actively engaging and observing them, over solely reading about them in a textbook. Thank you Naples Luxury Builders!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our goal is to provide our 3rd graders at VME the opportunity to have hands on experience and learn science through exploration. This will allow students to explore beyond what they read in a science textbook.

What will be done with my students

The wireless digital microscope plugs into student laptops via USB connection and allows students to easily view structures too small to be seen with the human eye. We will be able to use the microscopes when implementing 3rd grade learning goals such as: The Practice of Science, Observations and Inferences, Classifying Flowering and Non-flowering Plants, Plant Structures, Properties of Matter, Changes in Matter, and more.

Benefits to my students

The benefits of hands-on learning is immeasurable. Students will be given the opportunity to see characteristics of structures that they usually only see in science videos and textbooks. Imagine being able to see the structures that make up the surface of a leaf, comparing and contrasting the different types of surfaces of leaves, or even being able to classify flowering and non-flowering plants through examining the structures more closely. Learning through observation and exploration will greatly benefit our 3rd grade scientists.

Budget Narrative

10 wireless digital USB microscopes at $30 each.
