Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 19

These SSYRA books have added so much to our classroom reading. Some students have already read all 15, which is quite amazing. Having these books right here in the classroom makes them accessible. These books are in HIGH demand by students in grades 2-5 so they are usually all checked out from the media center. It can be very frustrating when trying to get that special book and it's nowhere to be found. This project has increased my students' desire to read and comprehension has improved because they are readintg high interest books. These books are very well loved.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is for students to develop a love for reading while improving their reading skills of comprehension (understanding what was read), fluency (reading at an appropriate rate) and decoding (reading individual words).

What will be done with my students

Sunshine State Young Readers Award is a program created by the Florida Association for Media in Education. This program was designed to develop student interest in reading for pleasure by exposing them to a wide range of appropriate literature. Sunshine State books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. Students will be able to read all fifteen of this year's books. They will work on their comprehension, fluency and decoding while earning brag tags (provided by the media center as an incentive and reward).

Benefits to my students

My students will improve their reading skills and develop a love for reading by exposing them to varied and diverse literature.

Budget Narrative

The whole budget will be spent on paperback (when available) and hardcover Sunshine State books.
